Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I bought this 99 tip a few weeks back.. obviously should have done the ppi prior, so I'll call this a post purchase inspection... The car is going into W.Jennings http://wjenningsco.com , they offered an oil change as part of their 175$ inspection service. So since an oil leak just started last week, I thought to let them take a look... the leak drips off the passenger side of the engine, near what looks to be a info sending wire plug unit - the leak is small.. only developing a half dollar size spot over 5 /6 days.. So I am looking for any advice regarding what to specially ask for from the indy tech - I am the 4th owner of this 85k mile, unmolested garage queen, original owner had the car for 12y- I don't see any receipts for an alt, wp, I do have receipts for the water reservoir replacement, complete break job at 75k miles and cab motor replacement at 80k. The car does have receipts from Porsche service for 30k and 45k and most oil changes.. a few batteries. Hopefully buying with out PPI won't bite me in the A$$., I appreciate this forum and thanks in advance for dropping some knowledge my way - BTW -Next week, getting a new windshield from Glass America... happy to get a new windshield.. but I am a little worried about the talent level at Glass America... some one tell its going to be okay -

POST 2Original post

I'll totally take responsibilty for this, but I didn't get an inspection either. I listened pretty well to the test drive, and ignored the muffler rattle. All the really scary stuff is hidden anyway, it's not like they could look at the IMS or tell me how much wear was left on the clutch... Going to change the oil filter soon and check it out, and take another good listen to the engine and around the IMS when I have a chance. Not too worried since the car VIN is outside of the class action lawsuit and I'll deal with that over the winter or next year.

POST 3Original post

how many cars did you look at before buying this cab? I ask because if you drove 10 cars already and this one was the one that stuck out at you and you did an onsite inspection you will probably be okay. It sounds like the history of the car was pretty well documented. Like, Chimac said, the really scary stuff (IMS, RMS, etc.) isn't something they are going to be able to diagnose by looking at the car. If anything you could find that there are some things (like shocks, struts, ball joints, etc.) that could potentially be needing replacements that a PPI would have flushed out and given you some additional leverage in the negotiation...

POST 4Original post

Quotes source post: 12150217

Well and it's a used car, and with used anything you have risks. Honestly the "best" way to buy a vehicle that's used is disassembled and in boxes. That way you can really pick through things and find out what you really have. Since we usually don't have that we need to rely on all the tools we have, and the level of risk we're willing to accept. Although if the IMS was going out I'd swear you should be able to hear something, although who knows, weird **** happens, but usually mechanical things don't just do something without some kind of warning. fwiw I didn't really have any leverage in negotiations, the price was fair, the car was here, gf loved the color, and my situation wasn't going to change any (money wise), so ended up going with it. First Porsche I drove, first car I saw, bought it. idk back to drinking and retouching pictures...

POST 5Original post

If the cab part works up and down ok from the dash and key in the door method, then that's a big part in your deal. I see you are on the east coast. A hard top would have been a good addition. Too late now if you didn't get one with the car. I don't see how you refer to the car as a Garage Queen for a 99 job with 85000 miles on the clock. No way. Mine has 73600 and it is no way a garage queen. A good thing going for is, it has the double race IMSB in the engine. My guess on the oil drip is from the spark plug tubes. The 'info sending wire plug unit' you refer too is probably one of the coils. Change the plugs, tubes and O rings (the 99 job has them). One of plastic tubes could be cracked. They are probably due anyway. Change all of the fluids as PM on the car. Serpentine belt. Water pump and engine mounts due about now. All DIY jobs. No mad rush. Summer is on the way for DIYing. Have fun.

POST 6Original post

I use w Jennings on and off. As I live in fairfield. Honest enough. But it does grate me a bit they won't install customer supplied parts.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 12151789

good to hear - thanks any other shops in ffield are that you could recommend ? Also - speedsport allows customers to bring / supply parts? many thanks

POST 8Original post

Unfortunately not. Anything really big, head to speedsport. Jennings does my oil changes, minor fixes of my 968, cayenne and 996 that I can't wait to do myself as these cars are my DD. I would use them more if they accepted customer parts. They do though offer 1 year on all their repairs.

Cab part works well, the PO replaced the cab motor last year at a P dealership $1800., I was having some reservations choosing cab because of the mechanism, but one of the Pos also replaced the top with glass r window/ defrost.. that coupled w the new motor, I was having trouble finding a way to say no to this car- I wasn't interested in a detach hard top, [[this wont be my DD]] being in CT, I have a 4x truck for snow days - I dont enjoy having a hard top around, my past TR6, 64 spitfire was a hassle, my 70 bronco top took 3 strong people to get it off an on the truck, [and about 40 half inch bolts.. lol] I am sure the 996 detach hard top top is much better than any of the above mentioned, as I know porsche has a better grasp nearly everything compared to triumph let alone engineering a removable hard top - my 914 is was what sold me on porsche .. the targa fit perfectly in the frunk., also the 914 didnt blow head gaskets every july like the triumphs - but I just didn't see myself storing a hard top during summer- I may be mistaken on the G queen' label due to the hi miles as you mention., the orig owner had the car for 12 years and averaged 6k miles per year, looking at the car it shows as if it had 30k miles.. no boot scuffs on the door sills, near perfect interior /exterior has a few scratches that are hard to see / find. They defiantly didn't drive too much in snow, I believe the orig owner kept the car in the Hamptons was only used in sping/summer fall- Many thanks for the advice on service and the DYI -

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

w jennings is a great shop for oil change , they have a midwinter special for 996 oils change that is $ 136.19 their diagnosis of my oil leak was do to... RMS, camshaft position sensor, and drivers side valve cover gasket, I didn't see the car on the lift so I'll jack it up this w/e and take a long look.. as its strange that I am only seeing a very small drip from the passenger side of the engine. They also mentioned that my axel seal [drivers side] needs a replacing - $370 Also the 90k mile service would be tip trans service $540 and a set of new spark plugs.. I am going to try to dyi thte trans and plugs- Anyone have some ideas are greatly appreciated -

POST 11Original post

Be aware that the RMS could actually be the IMS cover leaking which is a sign that it is on its way out. We all know that there have been dozens of RMS updates so not to scare you I would assume its the Seal and not to worry. The valve cover does not have a gasket. To remove the cover the cams must be held with a special tool. The electronic sensor you refer to would be the cam position sensor which on that motor is externally replaced. No big deal. Plugs and tubes are a must if they haven't been done and look to see if the coils are cracked and rusty. dozens of coil updates as well. Hope this helps.
