Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Repair worse' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend jake raby' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I'd highly recommend reading the thread if you want to do the rebuild.

Suggestion
Some m-codes are easier to find core engine blocks for at a reasonable price, so it's not always cost effective to repair the blocks, but when you need an M97.21 or M97.01, those cases are hard to get an expensive.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I finally tore down my engine that broke some years ago. I was hoping that the case might have been ok but clearly not, the crank is probably gone also. Is there anything I should save for spares? Half a case? Pistons? From the top end Ill save the heads of course.
It happened on a track but no competition, just for fun. All three chain tensioners had been mounted in the wrong places by previous owner so Im thinking it could have been part of the reason it failed, or just oil starvation.
Save everything, you never know down the road if/when people will start fixing parts that are considered junk today. You still got some usable parts: sump plate, IMS, heads, the block might be a candidate for a full sleeve conversion.
The bad case half could be used for practice installing wrist pins if nothing else.
I'd be interested in the crank if it isn't in too bad of shape.
I'd use it for instructional purposes only...once I'm able to have another automotive class. (Covid-19 sucks!)
A broken rod/damaged piston would be great for Automotive 101 classes. (Here's what happens if...)
I held onto my blown up engine and have given away a lot of parts to people that needed them. You'd be surprised how a part you might throw away today could be of use to another rennlister in the future.
Wow...looks identical to my engine when it blew up....For mine it was clearly oil starvation on the same cylinder as yours. The Crank was worn and discolored from overheating at that location.
I still have the LN bearing from that engine when I disassembled which of course was intact....
Charles, is the bearing still useable?
I got a case that is broken about like that, I was gonna make one of those glass top coffee tables out of it. I guess I will have to find another base to make my glass top coffee table from . Thanks !!!
Have you got any pics of how you support the lower cylinder of the broken case?
Wow, I really didnt think that would be possible since the damage is in the lower part of the cylinder! Too bad the shipping cost to US from Sweden probably will be pretty high for such a large and heavy item. The other half of the case also has some damage, although minor, in the same place so that would also have to be fixed. I was thinking of contacting Hartech in UK to see what they say, the shipping and other costs would be much lower.
5 years ago, my IMS failed. Sold the 202 996.2 base Carrera 6 MT roller to
Ahsai
who rebuilt the engine as a 3.8 over a nearly 1 year period. The thread

I'd highly recommend reading the thread if you want to do the rebuild. I also highly recommend Jake Raby

Beat of luck of your efforts.

Here is what the repair looks like to replace the parent metal on the crankcase side of the cylinder.
