I used a floor jack with a 2x4 under the cross brace and supported the engine that way, then took out the mounts, replaced them, and let the engine back down again.
Leading evidence: 'Use floor jack' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Use floor jack' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Used the jack with a length of 2 x 4 to support the engine and take the load off of the mounts.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey guys,
Quick question. I've been getting different advice, and I've seen both methods on the forums labeled as "DIY", but I wanted to get the most recent up-to-date advice on the matter.
When swapping motor mounts, is it absolutely necessary to jack up the car and place it on jack stands? I would prefer not to, and with that, if it's necessary, I'd just take it to a shop. I lost a friend due to improper jack stand placement, and I've even had a mechanic bend my rocker (on the frame) due to improper back stand placement. I personally do know where and how to mount them, but I DO NOT TRUST THEM.
That being the case, I've seen people swap mounts by only placing the jack under the motor with a hockey puck or piece of wood. Obviously this is required in both methods, but the latter does not say to jack up the car and place it on stands..
So what are your thoughts? Is it even necessary at all to jack up the car to swap mounts? To me it seems unnecessary, I have plenty of room, thanks to my techart rear, to access the mounts. Would simply holding the ending up with a jack below it be enough? What is the reason for placing the car on jack stands?
Thanks,
You don't really need to jack the car up as much as you need to support the engine from underneath. I used a floor jack with a 2x4 under the cross brace and supported the engine that way, then took out the mounts, replaced them, and let the engine back down again. I may have backed it onto ramps just to get more clearance underneath but in any case no way do you need jack stands.
The main thing is having access to the nut underneath. It's up inside and not that easy to get to if the car is not raised. You don't have to raise the car but sure makes it easier.
+1 I put double 2 X 10's under the rear wheels, jacked the car up to do this. Used the jack with a length of 2 x 4 to support the engine and take the load off of the mounts. Was a very straight forward job.
Note that I broke the top mounting bolts and lower motor mount nuts loose before I dug in just to make sure I didn't hit a snag as I went along.
I have a C4S and so the clearance is not great but I was able to get enough clearance to do the motor mounts without jacking or ramping the car at all. I simply protected the engine from the floor jack and took most of the weight of the mounts. Make you take enough weight off and have it centred because mine shifted slightly. Easily rectified by another push on the jack. Safer to do one mount at a time as well in case it shifts.
I'm a bit paranoid about jackstands myself, much more comfortable now that I have these...
It's a bit tight to do motor mounts without either a lift, jackstands, or ramps.
I have been using these

and while they're not cheap, they work well. I've used them for brakes, brake bleeding, plugs and motor mounts.
As others have said, you need to get to the nut under the car and this is easier with the rear raised up.
Agree with others there's no need to jack up the car as long as you can slide your jack under the engine block. Just lie on your back to access the nuts.
