Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'starter' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'starter' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace aos coolant connector' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
Also due to having to lean in to get to the starter, I would plan on replacing the AOS coolant connector.

Yes, expect to break it off if it hasn’t been replaced very recently.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My 996, 2004 Carrera 2 struggles to start, especially after the first start. I have new Interstate battery and new alternator. I've been reading about Y battery cable or a starter cable, but don't know what it looks like, what it costs, and is it possible to replace myself (I'm not mechanically inclined)?
Be sure to read the full thread linked. Down around post 78-80 they link to other threads that might be helpful as well.
If you describe yourself as "not mechanically inclined" this isn't a project I would recommend. Pulling the alternator is a bit of a pain, especially if the top right dowel is seized. (I had to get a small bearing press into there to pull it loose.). Hammering on the bolt might work, but if too stuck, it might also break the aluminum mounting point.
Beyond that it's just the throttle body, some vacuum hoses, a few wires... and working in a very tight space at arms length, and blindly feeding the wires through.
I've delved into more involved projects on this car than I ever have before. I've completed jobs that were intimidating and daunting to start with, but came out okay. I think everyone should be willing to dive in and try to DIY. But I think I'm pretty mechanically inclined, have been proven right (so far!!) and would be nervous if I felt otherwise.

Replace it with an aluminum one from ro.

I agree.
If you’re an avid DIYer, then you’ll likely have no problems.
(Just be patient and stubborn when reinstalling the plenums)
But I wouldn’t suggest it as a first DIY on a 996.
It’s not as difficult as doing an AOS, but it’s still a moderately difficult job.
update. The cable from the battery to the alternator, to the starter had to be replaced. Then it turned out to be the starter. The starter was shorting out, replacement was a bit of a bear and the plenum was tough to get back in, but everything is now fixed and the car starts right up.
Thanks for following up!
You did it yourself?
Excellent, you can now level-up from "I'm not mechanically inclined." to "I know my way around a wrench."
