Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Saw someone installed the IMS bearing and the bolt is not centered when the belt tensioners are not released. So does it mean this end of the IMS shaft (#6 in the diagram below) is "floating" inside the case? I mean looking with all the tensioners in place, #10 is pulling the IMS upward and the #11's are pulling it sideway and slightly upward. What is pulling the IMS downward to counteract the forces then?? The tiny IMS bolt? junk.jpg

POST 2Original post

Without the IMS seal/flange to keep the intermediate shaft centered, the tension from the chains can pull that end of the IM shaft out of center. Rick 99 996C4 87 944S

Hi Rick, Thanks for the explanation. So that also means all the net forces from the tensioners will be exerted onto the (tiny) center bolt on the IMS bearing and the 3 bolts on the flange...isnt' that a lot of lateral force the bolts and bearing have to bear then?

POST 4Original post

The tensioning rails keep the chain from going too far upward when the IMS isn't bolted down. And the bearing end of the IMS isn't "floating", each end of the shaft connects to one of the cams, such that at the front of the engine it's pulled to the left by the cams, and at the rear of the engine it's pulled to the right. You can see it better in a top-down view.

Thanks Dave. By floating, I mean without the IMS flange installed, it will be kind of "floating". Otherwise, how do we explain the center bolt can get de-centered? Oh yea, I forgot about that actually the left and right chains are actaully on the opposite ends of the engine.

POST 6Original post

The flywheel end of the IMS has the bearing centered by the flange. The other end of the IMS is centered by the oil pump. So it does "float" a bit when either of these is removed. To remove the IMS flange or the oil pump you are supposed to take out the chain tensioners to take the pressure off the IMS.
