Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Bought my C4S about a year ago and decided recently to get a baseline on all common maintenance items. Changed oil, flushed brake fluid, turkey-basted PS fluid, changed transmission oil. And tried to change front diff oil, which is where the problem arose. After draining the diff oil, I inserted the drain plug and hand tightened until firm. Then used torque wrench (21 ft lbs) but the plug just kept spinning. Then it just pulled straight out. The threads on the diff (which appears to be cast aluminum) are completely stripped. I wasn't pulling at all hard on the torque wrench, but the threads stripped anyway. I keep wondering if maybe the threads had been weakened or even stripped before (the diff fluid that came out was very new, so the previous owner had it done not long before selling the car). Bottom line: I can't think of anything I did wrong here, but the fact is the threads are stripped. I can fix the diff (either helicoil or tapping a hole for a larger plug), but I'm pretty freaked out because my next project was going to be spark plugs and coils. If threads in cast aluminum diff strip this easily, I'm worried about stripping threads in the head for the spark plugs. Care to talk me down from the ledge? Thanks, JRP

POST 2Original post

that is very unusual for such a large thread. Likely a screw up by the prior owner

POST 3Original post

You changed the oil and didn't strip the filler, so you should be assured the former owner/tech "screwed" up.

POST 4Original post

Get off the ledge. This happens all the time and maybe not in this very location. Clean it, drill it, tap it, helicoil it, clean it and move on.

POST 5Original post

There are repair sleeves that you can thread in to things like the drain, check your local hydraulic shop. Way better than a Helicoil and stronger. They go in with the Green locktight I believe, (The stuff that doesn't come out without extreme measures.) The sleeves are steel. I use Timeserts for most thread repairs but they are painfully expensive.
