Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Replace three' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Inspect left cams (cyl 1-3)' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I only replaced the two tensioners that are easy to get to and skipped the one under the A/C compressor.

Pulling out the cam plugs, inspect left cams (cyl 1-3) to make sure the groove lines up with the head (so you can use locking tool)

I am looking for a DIY on how to replace the chain tensioners on a 3-chain 3.6 motor.

If you're just replacing the tensioners, then it's pretty straight forward.

I have some light chain rattle on start-up and a bit of something rattling when I shut-the motor off, figure I will replace these as preventative maintenance.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am looking for a DIY on how to replace the chain tensioners on a 3-chain 3.6 motor. I see tons of info on the 5-chain. All I can find is people say they think you need to lock the motor on a 3 chain, does anyone have a DIY on this?

I am reading the section on intermediate shaft replacement in the Bentley Manual, that describes-
Drain Oil
Remove the spark plugs
Rotate crankshaft to cyl 1 TDC, then locking the crankshaft with 9595/1 tool
Pulling out the cam plugs, inspect left cams (cyl 1-3) to make sure the groove lines up with the head (so you can use locking tool)
If the Cams are not aligned then rotate motor 360 (remove crank tool)
Locking the cams with tool 9686
Remove the chain tensioners.
Is all that necessary if only doing the tensioners on a 3-cam?
I replaced all three when I did my IMSB. If I remember correctly, the AC compressor blocks access to one of them. Being a belt AND suspenders kind of guy, I locked both banks of cams. Then just unscrewed and replaced. I think at least one required holding it in place to compress the spring, while starting the threads at the same time.
Standing at the rear of the car facing the engine, I removed the green plug from the LH bank and locked the cams. I only replaced the two tensioners that are easy to get to and skipped the one under the A/C compressor. I did them one at a time after soaking them in oil for a while.
If you're just replacing the tensioners, then it's pretty straight forward. Lock the engine as required, replace. I recently did a 3-chain rebuild on my channel and I can't recall anything that would make it challenging if I needed to swap these out. Good luck!
