I checked the site I bought it from but I don't see it listed there anymore.

Hi folks, replaced water pump, thermostat, etc, last week only to have coolant puke out of the expansion tank upon pressurization (engine got a little warm during burping).

One member said that he used electrical tape to seal it pretty well.

Swapping it might make it look clean but functionally does it do anything?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi folks, replaced water pump, thermostat, etc, last week only to have coolant puke out of the expansion tank upon pressurization (engine got a little warm during burping).
A bit of history: I replaced the tank with OEM style from Pelican about 14 months ago BEFORE I was aware of all the threads about aftermarket tanks. I do have the updated 04 cap. After extensive searching and reading, Im discovering that the threads often wont seal tightly on these OEM tanks, and mine does feel stripped when I tighten it as it wont get very tight.
One member said that he used electrical tape to seal it pretty well. But WHAT THE HELL, Pelican?? Why are you selling this crap if SO MANY of them end up failing?? I mean, cost is one thing, but the freakin labor involved is just a total PITA. No way would I offer a product if I knew there was such a huge failure rate.
Am I wrong? My frustration is pretty high right now. I really dont want to change it again. Is there ANY way I can avoid this? Glue it on? Lol dang would SOMEBODY come with an easier solution?
Thanks for letting me vent.
That was fantastic.
Nice "vent". This is one of those subjects that has been gone over and over. Use only a Porsche OE coolant expansion tank. I know...expensive as hell, but it is one instance where you want to just get it done right. The aftermarket or OE style coolant tanks suck.
Since you've already installed the tank and it's a major pita to change it out, why don't you try some Teflon tape on the threads for the cap? Generally speaking, Teflon tape is used for plumbing thread connections (at least it was last time I checked... Electrical tape? Uh... NO!). Give it a shot... In the words of our fearless leader - "what have you got to lose"?
What does he have to lose? Several things, especially the fact that he will constantly have to worry about driving it somewhere and it failing. Then having to pay for a tow, etc.
I'm trying to remember a good quote someone told me years ago about this very situation. It's something like: "Do it right the first time and you will cry once (when you pay for it) but then you're happy ever after. Choose the cheap option and you'll be happy the first day, but cry everyday after."
You chose the more expensive option already. Waiting will only make it even more expensive. You WILL have to do it right no matter what, it is just how much frustration and money you are willing to waste in the meantime. It stinks but you should do it right by getting the OEM tank.
^^ Not if Teflon tape works
... Generally speaking, I would agree with you, but he's already put the aftermarket tank in. It's not like his motor is going to blow up if leaks again - he'll just have another puddle to clean up, and then he'll top off the tank again...The coolant tank cap leaking is not a catastrophic failure...
It's so disheartening to see these prices for MK1 vs MK2. The prices should be very similar. ( yes I have 2 MK1's to upkeep, and am not a wealthy man)
Porsche doesn't make the coolant tanks, so there is an alternative of the same quality, just no one knows for sure which OEM manufacturers makes the "good" one !!
Leaving it unpressurized will reduce their boiling point of the coolant, and slightly reduce the heat transfer of the coolant. I have left many caps for pressurized systems loose for years without overheating or other problems. I leave the cap to my 997 turbo loose, as its better than losing coolant tubes due to bubble gum glue.
A 996 shouldnt see north of 205 degrees and if it has coolant in it it should boil at substantially higher than that. As long as it doesnt leak not sure to the downside with a cooling system that has the reservoir at the highest part otf the system, but possibly a higher rate of evaporation which is small.
Make sure your fan resistors are good, and coolant is full to specified levels. Teflon tape may work, but is usually for tapered pipe fittings which the cap and bottle threads are not
I think I've got a good spare mk1 tank in my store , bidding please bidding please start your bids now please bidding now porsche 996 mk1 coolant tank from C2 99 😆
Use Evans NPG coolant. No pressure as it will not boil at operating temperatures. You can drive long distances with your radiator cap loose (ask me how I know).
Not a bad deal considering the price of the MK1 tanks, but I already have a spare..
Just dig into your "sock drawer" and get the cash for the UAOS (you already told me you want one
)...I'm trying to build an inheritance for my kids/grandkids instead of leaving them with bills...lol
None of the aftermarket tanks are worth a damn.
This is a part that I will only use genuine Porsche. I have tried them all.
The shape of the tank makes it very difficult to fabricate a tank to fit this location. The real estate inside this area of the engine compartment is critical.
I laughed at the piper and spit at him too. I was told that the tank I bought was manufactured by the same company that manufactures them for Porsche, but that the part number was sanded off. I have no idea if that is true, but I installed it two years ago and haven't had an issue. I checked the site I bought it from but I don't see it listed there anymore. I did add the updated Porsche cap.
Is the coolant tank really the source of an issue or is it just the place to help identify an issue (intermix). Swapping it might make it look clean but functionally does it do anything? I should restate the question, what functional parts does it have? Perhaps bleed valve? Cheers
For those keeping score at home - a few months after I posted this the piper showed up looking for his money...with interest and penalty. Nothing but Genuine Porsche coolant tanks for me going forward. Lesson learned.
