I have noted where the inside of my windshield has been cleaned with a RainX wipe, there is no condensation.
Leading evidence: 'Clean i have noted where the inside of my windshield' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check of the carpets' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I can't seem to make them clear, no matter how I set the climate controls.

The windshield stays clear, and I use the rear defroster to clear the rear window.

do a quick check of the carpets to make sure they are dry (as can be) as a leaking seal will make the same thing happen.

Now that winter is finally here and we've had some colder weather outside, I've run into a problem with the 996 that I don't remember having before.

- If uncooled air flows out when the lowest temperature has been set, switch off the air-conditioning compressor and consult with an authorized Porsche dealer.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Now that winter is finally here and we've had some colder weather outside, I've run into a problem with the 996 that I don't remember having before. Every time I drive the car for more than 5 minutes the side windows fog up. I can't seem to make them clear, no matter how I set the climate controls. The windshield stays clear, and I use the rear defroster to clear the rear window.
Anyone else have this issue? Any optimum combination of settings on the climate control system to help avoid this? I've tried blowing the air from the top vents, angling the outboard vents towards the window, re-circulate, etc.
From the owner's manual:
General instructions for air-conditioning compressor
- Can switch off briefly if engine is under an extreme load to ensure sufficient engine cooling.
- Switches off automatically at temperatures below 37F/3C and cannot be switched on, even manually.
- Operates most effectively with windows closed. If the car has been in the sun for a long time, however, it is a good idea to ventilate the interior briefly with door windows open.
- Depending on the outside temperature and humidity, condensation can drip from the evaporator and form a pool under the car. This is normal and not a sign of leakage.
- If uncooled air flows out when the lowest temperature has been set, switch off the air-conditioning compressor and consult with an authorized Porsche dealer.
If the compressor cannot be operated below 37F, then this may be the problem. It was well below 37F this morning.
I usually crack open the tilt on the sun roof and bump the fan up a couple notches... in Seattle we often have this problem.
The other thing that can cause this is water inside the car somewhere... do a quick check of the carpets to make sure they are dry (as can be) as a leaking seal will make the same thing happen. This also is a problem when making multiple trips in and out of the car with wet fett, jackets and alike as you are introducing a lot of water into the enviornment. When that water warms up it evaporates and then condenses on the windows....
Fresh air will help, which is why I crack open the top....
Let me know if your door speakers let in a lot of cold air if the top is open, mine seem to...might be that someone was in there and didnt put everything back together, or might be normal
Just guessing, but...
You park the 996 in a nice warm garage overnight. About 3-5 miles into your COLD morning drive the fogging begins. As you drive out of the garage the A/C compressor is working due to the garage temperature being well above freezing. A few miles down the road the OAT sensor acclimates to the COLD temperature and the A/C compressor shuts down thereby releasing ALL the just previously "gathered" condensate into the cabin.
The very BEST solution is to disable the A/C compressor altogether during the winter months. My 996 has a toggle switch mounted inside the console glove box that opens the A/C compressor clutch circuit.
Your 996 also has propensity for fogging over the windshield surface on the OUTSIDE during the summer months. Once the 996 climate control system has cooled the cabin to something reasonably close to your temperature setpoint it will open the windshield airflow routing thereby inadvertently COOLING the windshield. Condensation forming on the exterior of the windshield will often result.
I can't think of any reason for the system operating in this manner except for wider dispersion of the COOL system airflow. Not so much cool airflow, somewhat discomforting airflow, directed toward your face and upper body.
The best procedure to follow to avoid those instances is to manually close the windshield defrost/defog/demist airflow ducts.
To add more to the conversation - when I drove it yesterday after sitting outside in a cold parking lot at work, I had no fogging problems at all. It was in the 20s. I think the warm garage theory has legs...
I have noted where the inside of my windshield has been cleaned with a RainX wipe, there is no condensation. Might be worth a try if the fogging is annoying.
It's funny that you said that, because that is exactly what I wrote initially. However, in the spirit of Christmas, I thought that was too COLD of a statement so I took the high road and changed it to "I think Porsches make all of their owners "heavy breathers."
It was 18 F this morning. I tried deactivating the compressor as soon as I started the car in my nice, warm 48 garage. It worked quite well! No fogging!
