Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

FML, While mic'ing the crank I discovered that EPS, the company that installed the IMS bearing, also installed a RMS crank seal due to grooves on the end. Well they must have took a hammer to it because the sealing surface is trashed. In addition, the FMS area appears to have a worse problem. See pics. I see that there are companies that can "re-sleeve" the crank with a thin piece of stainless to have a better surface. I think I can get a Speedi Sleeve but looking for some feedback from you guys.

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Bumping this up because I think it got lost in the mix of new topics yesterday. Pinging @Porschetech3

POST 3Original post

I'd make sure the flywheel end has no raised metal. Then wipe it with a little jb weld to fill the divots and install a speedy sleeve. Front I'd just push the seal in a little more or less to get away from that groove. If you're superstitious you could sleeve the front too.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Superstitious indeed. lol I don't like leaks and I'm spending a mint to get this high mileage engine back on the road. Although I love the abuse, I don't like seeing neglect inside the egine. Makes me mad. I'll just sleeve both ends. They're cheap. BTW, someone with a tremendous amount of knowledge of these engines recommended JBW too! Thanks!

POST 5Original post

The seal can be installed a little deeper or shallower than the Porsche spec to clear this spot with the lip of the seal. There’s a wide range of areas across both flanges where the journal is the proper width to accept the seal.

POST 6Original post

Some good and accurate advise from @theprf and @BRS-LN ...not much I can add, BUT I will say to install the new seal "DRY"..( no lube) .. The new seals are PTFE ( Teflon) and are designed to be installed dry to function properly and to "break-in" correctly... PTFE when installed dry and tight will leave a residual of PTFE on the crankshaft as its running surface to form a PTFE to PTFE very slick running seal.... IF lube is used on the seal lip, the transfer will not take place and the advantage of using PTFE is lost, and the seal will be less effective..

POST 7Original post

Be sure to clean off any high points on the flywheel end. High points will mess up a new RMS for sure.
