Just had to get new instrument cluster on 2001 996. How do I set the current mileage on the new odometer? Do I need a dealer to reset this?

Yes they can !! IIRC there is a provision in PIWIS/PST2 to "read" the old cluster and "write" the info to the new cluster, there is also provisions to just "wrtie" the mileage in the new cluster if the old cluster cannot be "read" ( damaged beyond any functions ) ... NOTE: This can only be done on a NEW cluster and within the first 100 miles, after that the new cluster will be " automatically locked".. and only a Professional Hacker can change the mileage..

Dealer can do it within the first 100km, like tech3 said. You may as sell have them add the correct VIN in as well. I just had the mileage (82k) on my replacement cluster corrected by PaloAlto speedometer for $300 ish.
