I used my current setup that was on my 996 motor and trans.

I've had an alert set on Ebay for three years now in case they pop up, but nobody is selling any.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi there - does anyone know definitely if a 6 speed transmission from a 2006 997 will fit my 1999 996? Looking (hopefully) for first hand experience.
My second gear synchros are gone and I found 997 unit locally for considerably less than a rebuild at Gbox.
Thanks!
Yes it does. Hard part is that the shift linkage is on opposite sides. I just swapped to a 997 trans. Also be aware gearing is different. I have my 996 transmission for sale if interested.
I have a 997 transmission waiting to go into my 996 just as soon as I find reasonably priced output flanges for it. The 997 transmissions seem to be a good deal cheaper on the second hand market. As above, you will need a 997 set of shifter cables. It's also a few KG lighter, which is nice. The gearing is shorter to cope with the larger wheels found on the 997. This may be a good thing if you're into track driving.
If the gearing is shorter that means that the transmission would get to redline on the engine quicker, correct? Sorting this comment out in my head.
Does that also mean that the top speed of the car would be slower?
Well this is a super useful and interesting post....I did not realize. This also indicates that you get better power at the wheels....any idea on the equivalent chart for power.
The gearing in the 996 is way too long IMO - I would snap up a 997 box if the opportunity presented itself in a heartbeat.
I'm imagining a noticeable harder pull in 3rd and 4th which would be nice on track with the puny power. I'd go even shorter and gear it for like a 165 top speed if I had the $ to re-gear the gearbox.
I agree. I've always wondered if a final drive swap was available but never really looked into it. Not very high on my priority list for the car. This was very popular with Hondas back in the day and helped keep the low torque engines in the sweet spot.
Albins - I am not sure if still available but you could contact GBox...

Lots of potential there!
Hmmm,...4.00 for quicker acceleration...3.00 for 200+ MPH top end...throw in the 997 gear ratios and...
Might need 1 tranny for The Texas Mile, and another for daily driving..ha!
I'll stick with stock as long as it's working.
Not really, considering driving on the freeway at 75 mph is 2700rpm. No real need to spin it that fast for just driving, even if it a 3.6.
Seems the 991 cars have it covered with a 3.44 final drive and .62 seventh gear for cruising instead of spinning the engine for no reason whatsoever.
That 4.0 would surprise some people on track...
ETA... looks like albins 3-6 and R&P still available through

Very reputable gearbox shop about 2.5 yrs ago cost right at $5K for g96/01 rebuild w/ wavetrac tbd and some nice custom goodies. Gearbox was in good shape to start so no big parts required but 1-2 synchros and 3-6 rings did get replaced.
It’s not correct. I used my current setup that was on my 996 motor and trans. Which was a sach sport clutch and aasco lwfw. The crank sensor pick up is in the engine case which dictates what fw you use. The overall clutch and fw assembly height is the same.
Funny just finished this swap recently. You need 997 cables for the 997 transaxle as they are considerably shorter than the 996 cables. The shift linkage on the 997 is on the drivers side and closet to the front of the car.
Also worth noting that the coolant lines are in the way of the cables a bit as they are arranged to make room on the pass side. You can make it work but they're pressed right up into the coolant lines and the cables need a bit of a bend to work. Also the nose of the 997 transaxle is a bit longer and a different shape so it's a real tight squeeze getting the transaxle back up - lots of wiggling and fiddling.
I needed several extensions to reach all the transaxle bolts with about 30" total for the top one. Easy with lots of extensions lots of tears without.
The 996 slave is the same as the 997 - everything is a bolt up affair. A trick for reinstalling the slave since you'll be fighting the shifter fork is to get the top bolt hole lined up and then stick a 5mm punch through it into the transaxle. Then you can pivot the slave down to make the bottom hole line up and get the bottom bolt in - remove the puncg and pivot it back up to get the top bolt in.
Worth the effort for me yes as 2nd was gone in my 996. That being said I'm pretty mech inclined and it was not a fun job working on my back on the floor. A transmission jack is REQUIRED do not attempt this job without one. It took me 3hrs to get the transaxle out including jacking the car up on stands and about 6 hrs to get it back in spread over a couple days. I had a very frustrating time getting it to pop in the last inch - everything has to be very nicely lined up.
I don't notice the gearing difference at all as it is very small and I would not do this swap for that purpose.
I have a 997 gearbox waiting to go into my 996 but it's missing its output flanges. I've had an alert set on Ebay for three years now in case they pop up, but nobody is selling any. Is there anybody out there with a busted 997 tranny who is willing to sell me the output flanges for sensible money?
Dropping the motor and trans as one unit is the way to go. I spent the majority of my time fighting that last inch too. Some get lucky but the pain is not worth the time if you don't get lucky! my .02
