About 4 months ago I found a nice used 30K mile C4 transmission on EBAY from a reputable seller (Porsche Parts Global) for $2500 and paid my local mechanic $600 labor to do the swap (C2 might be a little less since you don't have to disconnect the front drive shaft).

Suggestion
Once they get the transmission open and inspected there could be synchros or bearings that may add to the cost depending on how far gone that bearing is and if metal debris has led to other wear.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey guys, looks like my 996 C2 MT LSD has the dreaded pinion bearing problem.
Looking for a competent and reasonable shop to get this done in the NJ area. Any recommendations? Received a quote of $4.9k from one place. Looked into GBOX but shipping may be cost prohibitive and I dont have the ability to pull the trans myself at the moment.
Thanks in advance!
You've probably seen this, but this thread looking for an NJ/NY tech for another issue may help ->

Pete I think he’s looking for specific tech
competency of nyc area techs are thin and most are cost prohibitive
ive found reasonably nearby shops that are knowledgeable and recommended
L&N engineering has a great list of shops
Keep in mind, the $4.9K quote may not be complete. Once they get the transmission open and inspected there could be synchros or bearings that may add to the cost depending on how far gone that bearing is and if metal debris has led to other wear.
FWIW I had this issue on my C4. My transmission was making a whine for quite a while and getting louder. About 4 months ago I found a nice used 30K mile C4 transmission on EBAY from a reputable seller (Porsche Parts Global) for $2500 and paid my local mechanic $600 labor to do the swap (C2 might be a little less since you don't have to disconnect the front drive shaft). If your LSD is still good, you could swap it over assuming the new transmission has an open diff. The internals of my old transmission were trashed - lots of pitting on the gear teeth from all that metal. The oil that came out looked like dark green metallic paint there was so much metal flaking.
My old transmission was at 135K miles, so I was pretty sure that it was going to be a significant cost for a rebuild. This was by far the cheaper option for me. Its been running nice and quiet ever since.
