Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that contain suggestions
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suggestion
If you're trying to stay around $25k, that should get you a great driver, and if you choose to sell later, you might break even after adjusting for inflation and general cost of ownership.
Leading evidence: 'Adjust inflation and general cost of ownership' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'prices' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust inflation and general cost of ownership' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
I don't suspect prices to drop, maybe remain stable, and the prime examples will continue to bring top dollar.

Suggestion
For $25,500 you should be able to find a nice example with a clean history, IMO.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

HelloI have been pining for a 911 since I sold my red headed step child 914 13 years ago. I am looking to jump into the market at the low end. I am looking for a C2 996.2 I have found a car that has a "story" 2002 black on black C2 It had the engine rebuilt with a rebuilt shortblock (not new) 34k miles ago due to bore scoring. IMS bearing has been done. It also was in an accident a few years ago. Front and Rh side with enough damage to require frame straightening. It was not written off however. Now the car looks to be refinished to a high standard and has been driving for years in its current state. 83k miles on the body and less on the engine. Owner is asking $25500. Run away? Offer less or is that reasonable to the market? All work was done by a reputable Indy shop.
I appreciate this is a how long is a piece of string type question but I don't know what the community feels about damage history.
Cheers
For $25,500 you should be able to find a nice example with a clean history, IMO. If they'd let it go for closer $20k I'd probably consider it and drive the wheels off.
Thanks for the response. That is my thinking too. I am looking for a sanity check here.
I do want a driver not a garage queen. I offered $20500 however they felt that was too low. Not sure where to go from here....
That car can never be the same, and the price they are asking is normal 996 money, not frame damage money. As others have said, there are plenty of nice 996s available for similar money. All you need is just a little patience.
Those guys had a ton of them according to the sold list. Not much at the moment so I will keep watch on it. They have a couple 996.1Thanks for the link. If anyone has any other good sources please offer them up. I am in Canada and there is very little here so looking to the giant USA market.
Plenty of non-bent 996s out there that have been well maintained with service records and proper procedures completed. Especially in the US.
Not certain were you are located in Canada, but there are PCA regions in the US that host a plethora of events that you can get involved in and begin networking for one. In addition, every PCA region has a few top Porsche Indies that you can identify and contact to let them know what you are looking for. They always know someone. Not to mention you will need to have them perform a thorough PPI once you have found a car.
You will find the perfect one. It's only a matter of time.
Good luck.
If you are set on a 911, I agree, keep looking. There are deals out there on cars.com, other websites, that do not charge a premium or even market rate.
Otherwise, consider an early dual-row Boxster S. They are just as much fun as an early 911 in my opinion. And much cheaper. Only reason I have a 911 is the rear sets for the kids.
Western Canada (Alberta) is where I'm located. I'll reach out to the local Indy shop. I had them do an alignment in my BMW and they were great.
I have started searching west coast USA cars and starting to see some out there. Its nearly winter here so time is on my side.
There are plenty of 996s available but being in Canada that makes it much harder, COVID market made the price jump like crazy, but it should soften up in winter. Personally I would find a 987.2 or 981 Cayman , they are in $30k range with higher mileage - way more fun to drive and less issues.
Im 61 so to me the Cayman I test drove was way too cramped. If I recall correctly I think they have about 10 less legroom than a 996. Definitely something worth carefully considering.
I have had my heart set on a 911. There are arguably better cars out there for that money. Even my FBO M235i with suspension would give a 996 a run for its money.
The "kills bugs fast" poster I have on the garage wall is of a 911.
I am thinking now that the Canadian land border is open I could find a car, fly down and drive back. Bit of a hassle paperwork wise.
I have ridden the PCH on a sportbike from Calgary to LA and it was fantastic. A drive home that way could be epic.
Excellent feedback!
Does anyone feel with COVID crazy winding down that 996 prices/supply will stabilize or will costs start to/continue to climb?
Better is subjective, I don't think it gets any better than a 996 for their current price point if you want a raw driving experience.
To the second comment, nobody knows. I don't suspect prices to drop, maybe remain stable, and the prime examples will continue to bring top dollar. If you're trying to stay around $25k, that should get you a great driver, and if you choose to sell later, you might break even after adjusting for inflation and general cost of ownership.
Dont know where prices are going over the next few months. But I do know that if you have your sights set on a 996, then that's what you should get. You will find it somewhere in Canada or the US. Plenty out there to sift thru.
