And is that recommendation purely for starting, or for use in general, eg, if the car's sitting in a garage that'd be around 40degF at the coldest, and I allow it to warm in the garage, am I in the clear for use if the outside temperature below the recommended temp?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

What is the temperature recommendation for Cold temperatures when using a 5W40 oil? (specifically Motul 5W40 Xcess). And is that recommendation purely for starting, or for use in general, eg, if the car's sitting in a garage that'd be around 40degF at the coldest, and I allow it to warm in the garage, am I in the clear for use if the outside temperature below the recommended temp?

POST 3Original post

They couldn't have done a broader gradient on that graph? I mean it's nothing to complain about but from that graph it looks like 50 degrees Fahrenheit is pretty hot. I'm an engineer leave me to my idiosyncrasies.

Oil's ok. I ran Mobil 1 15w-50 oil for 2 years after I bought my 02 Boxster cause Mobil 1 0w-40 was not available here yet. Ran the car in the mid-west in temps down close to 0 degs F. While car spent most nights in garage (above freezing) it would sit out in cold at work or when I was traveling and parked it outside at night in the cold of nortern Michigan for instance. When 0w-40 became available I switched to that then after 180K or more miles switched to Mobil 1 10w-40 "high mileage" oil. (Car has over 226K miles on it now.) Car sees all kinds of ambient temperatures from highs around 100F (or a bit hotter -- 116F in southern AZ one July road trip) to near 0F temps when I stop overnight at William or Flagstaff AZ on winter road trips. I have started running Mobil 1 5w-50 in my 03 Turbo and it saw 16F to 19F overnight temps at Flagstaff on T-Giving week road trip. Sincerely, Macster.
