Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I would also like to know what wires are bundled in the harness at this passthrough or behind it in the back of the dash so I can check all potentially damaged systems.

I will run this seemingly common 996 fault to ground with the standard troubleshooting, but first (as the most likely cause) I want to inspect/repair the harness where I drilled.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

1 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

New 1999 996 C4 Cabriolet owner seeking some front firewall passenger side grommet removal guidance/images (and as a new rennlist member, any forum etiquette corrections also welcomed )... Fools rush in where angels fear to tread ... yep! I have stepped very carefully like an angelic fool! I am installing a new GPS antenna in the frunk for a Pioneer head unit (to replace the PIN-locked DDIN PCM1), following guidance found on various websites. While slowly, carefully drilling a 1/8th" pilot hole through said grommet (above where the harness passed through at an angle, and as close to parallel as the confined space permitted - see photo below) I was horrified to find a 1/4" long single strand of copper wire on the drill bit and a small piece of green(?) sheathing. Coincidentally (unlikely), a day later, I now have a CEL with fault code P0447 that likely resolves to an open circuit on the evap vent pump near the fuel tank (or similar). Its not critical, but it will fail the smog test and is sub-optimal for fuel economy. I will run this seemingly common 996 fault to ground with the standard troubleshooting, but first (as the most likely cause) I want to inspect/repair the harness where I drilled. I'm really hoping to avoid a 4 hr dash removal with all the potential risks. Instead I am hoping that the grommet (see pic) can be removed from the frunk side, but I don't want to make the damage worse by blindly wresting that grommet from its 22-year resting place and further stressing the harness and electrical connections. I have given myself an appropriate number of uppercuts for stupidity and am aware that I am recruiting a lot of hope in my resolution of the 'own goal'... but If anyone has photos/experience/tips for inspection/servicing the harness at this location (including potential connections behind the pass through in the back of the dash), I would be most grateful. I would also like to know what wires are bundled in the harness at this passthrough or behind it in the back of the dash so I can check all potentially damaged systems. Needless to say my confidence from several successful mechanical and electrical repairs has been well rocked.
