Theres two methods that people are using to color change carpet: RIT dye vs a spray product(forget the name) but in every video Ive watched, theyre super pleased with the results, perhaps because theyre saving a couple hundred bucks?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My 1999 996.1 has a Red interior, specifically Boxster Red interior on 996.1. With my pasty Irish skin, I don't do red. The plan is to convert it to black. I'm going to dye the carpet and vinyl and see how it goes. If it does not come out as desired, we'll wrap bits in vinyl or leather, depending on the part. If anyone is interested in this Boxster Red interior, let me know & maybe we can swap my red for your black or whatever (gonna cover or dye it anyway). It's a 22 year old car with 140k miles on the interior. It's tired but complete. The carpet is pretty faded in some spots but appears to be otherwise in good condition. The interior is complete, no cracks on the dash. There appears to be a minor crack on a door card but otherwise complete. Again, I'll need all the parts so we'd have to a swap-for-swap. Would hate to ruin a Boxster Red if someone is jonesing for that. Located in Ohio.

I have basically the entire interior panels and dash from a 2004 gt3 and the carpet from a c2 in black. Dont need any kind of trade but it all for sale.... if i can figure out a fair price. Im in Delaware....not that far for a pick up .

Hey DeJeeper! I still haven't paid you for the sun visors! Check your private messages, I've sent you a bunch of messages with my wife's VENMO account. I ain't buying anything more from you until you let me settle my tab. I'm working with an upholsterer and we're looking at doing a custom interior--wrapping everything in leather (as budget allows) or Dynamica or vinyl for the compound curves--hence, I was going to roll the dice and see if I can dye vinyl and carpet without ruining it (people experiment on their Porsche 911s, right?) but I felt a little guilty about ruining a Boxster Red interior if someone wants it. The prospect of having a glovebox is appealing, so you've got my attention. Is everything already pulled out of the car, or it needs to be done? Pretty much everything is red in my interior except for the console center, headliner, vents, horseshoe, steering wheel, shift boot and, of course, the sun visors. Why don't you PM me a price list I'm in Cincy, the southwest corner of OH, GPS says nine hours from Delaware, so I'd have to figure that out with the wife. I'm having flashbacks to when I was in high school when I bought a old '69 Mustang racecar --sans the rear end, gearbox and 428 Cobra Jet engine. I stripped it of everything but the paint.

POST 4Original post

You can't dye the carpet, you'll want to just replace it. It's not flexible enough to realistically vat dye (and you'd need a boatload of dye to accomplish it), and the carpet will only take up a fraction of the dye and end up more of a weird gray color than black. You can find 996 or 997 carpet (they are interchangeable) on Ebay for pretty cheap.

Its the wifes venmo. My credit union kinda sucks for the electronic payment stuff. I finally have a little free time after going full tilt on the car. I get her to send the bill. Everything is out of the car. The carpet is from my 2000 c2 and is a little fadded and vynal under the pedles is lifted but its in pretty good shape overall. The dash is fully out and i have all the sub-structure to go with. Im pretty sure its all leather as the car had the option code. Its in real good shape but there may have a knick or 2 as i have not really looked at it closely. I can ship it or even drive some to meet. I will probably even go to mid-o for a hdpe next season but not sure u would want to wait that long

POST 6Original post

wish I was nearby! I'd love to swap red for black. but likely cost prohibitive to ship coast to coast.

POST 7Original post

Dont dye it all! Theres gotta be someone who would swap with you. Boxster red is too cool to just let it die(haha pun intended).

POST 9Original post

Don't get too carried away swapping early (no glovebox) and late (glovebox) dashes until you've researched it some. There's some differences that aren't easy to fix; the heat/AC plumbing/routing is different, and there are structural differences in some of the support pieces under the dash. Check around(the 986 Forum) I believe has a write-up or two. It's not a plug/play swap.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

@neilll @GarrettSR5 yes, thats why Im throwing it up here. Maybe someone wants it? The carpet is faded in parts so someone will need to do something with it to get it all a consistent color. It was actually the carpet vendor on Pelican who suggested that I dye it. Theres two methods that people are using to color change carpet: RIT dye vs a spray product(forget the name) but in every video Ive watched, theyre super pleased with the results, perhaps because theyre saving a couple hundred bucks? I dunno. Ive got the RennLine aluminum floorboards & Coco mats (on order) so how bad can I screw this up? But once the process is started, no going back. so before I go down that path, making sure nobody wants this Boxster red interior @RedTele oh man, I hadnt even thought that the HVAC plumbing would be different for a 996.1 to a 996.2 car. RennList is such a great forum! I guess Id be in the market for the HVAC guts too. @CaptainOblivious hmm. The track mats on RennLine are the same for 996-986 but different 997-987 so I had assumed the carpet was different? @De Jeeper PM me your address & Ill get a check in the mail tonight, if its simpler. its not right that you havent been paid. Wasnt planning on doing the interior until the car comes off the road for the winter (November-ish, here) so no rush. I go to Cleveland quite a bit to see my in laws, & Pittsburgh occasionally. The local porsche club is doing a HPDE weekend at Mid-Ohio in October, if you are going to that. otherwise my wife suggested I fly out to you and rent a vehicle to drive back. I assume I could jam all the stuff in a rented Sonata? Shipping would probably be cheaper though?

There is no difference behind the dash on the 996. I have had both an mk1 and 2 cars apart. The structual alum is different and i have those parts to go along with the dash. Only thing that mat need to be relocated is the litronic controler becuase it mounts behind the air bag in a mk1. I could probably meet u near Pitt if it all works out.

POST 12Original post

I swapped my Savanna carpet to black with 997 carpet. There are a few minor differences, but nothing that prevents you from using 997 carpet in a 996 (the main difference is the dead pedal area, where it takes a little extra massaging to get it in place). Also, the RIT dye barely even worked at full strength out of the bottle to re-dye the sun-bleached sections of the already black carpet.

POST 13Original post

I have all the center console side upholstery pieces, lid and horseshoe in black Alcantara if that's something you might be interested in. Also, an Alcantara thick steering wheel with leather hub. I had them all in my Boxster Red interior to tone it down some but after a few years decided to converted back to the red.
