I can disconnect the dog bones from the top to the hydraulic cylinders, and the top will lay down into it's compartment nicely, its just that the hydraulic cylinders only operate halfway.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So, I have a 1999 996 Cabriolet, and the top will only go halfway down and stop. hydraulic level is good. I can disconnect the dog bones from the top to the hydraulic cylinders, and the top will lay down into it's compartment nicely, its just that the hydraulic cylinders only operate halfway. Any ideas?

I had to replace the two cylinders on my last 996 almost exactly one year apart. I sincerely hope you dont suffer the same fate, but I had the same thing happen with mine as you described. If one of the cylinders is bad I suggest you replace both at once.
