I preferred the yatour unit though (despite folder limitations) as you can change tracks through the headunit).

I've searched for a good couple of hours trying to figure out what aftermarket options we have to make the radio not suck without replacing the whole thing.

Just waiting for the bluetooth to come in the mail and I'll be able to finish testing on a bread board then soldering into the becker unit

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

First post here. Couple weeks ago I bought a gorgeous, mid night blue 996 911. Can be seen

So much I could talk about, but there is one thing in particular. The cr220. I've searched for a good couple of hours trying to figure out what aftermarket options we have to make the radio not suck without replacing the whole thing. Nothing but useless, overpriced **** sold from Becker's ebay.
I was thinking of integrating blue tooth to the CR220/CDR220. I'm not talking about a dongle you tape somewhere on your dash and plug into the cigarette lighter and plug into the over priced aux cable from becker; that looks like ****.
Tools need:
Soldering Iron
1ea
5V Linear Regulator
(And whatever capacitors and/or resistors your spec sheet calls for)
1ea
USB Powered BT Unit
Buy a cheap, ugly one like the one I listed. You're going to be removing all the plastic anyways. Take everything off except for the A2PD blue tooth unit and aux port. Get your ****ty cr220 and open it up. Find your 12V ignition on power source. I don't have a schematic so you'll need to find where the pin on the back ends up on the actual circuit board. What the voltage regular does is change the 12V power supply to 5V. The capacitors are filters that ensure you get a steady 5V.
You'll set up your circuit something like: 12V source > filtered regulator > BT > aux.
Once you've powered your BT unit, you get your aux cord and cut off an end and you should have three wires: right & left audio, and common ground). There are three pins on the back of the unit that correspond to these three wires. Trace where these pins meet the board and solder these wires directly to the board similar to
this
. (NOTE: THIS IS AN EXAMPLE, NOT ACTUAL BECKER BOARD)
That's pretty much it. You're thinking well, no pics/schematics, this is meaningless. I just graduated from university and moved to a new state, so I got no tools at the moment. Hoping I'll pick up the tools and parts soon and document an actual guide with pictures and schematics. I'm just thinking out loud right now. Everything listed should fit within the head unit no problem, and you maintain an oem wiring harness.
The cable from Becker is cheap and it plugs directly into the back of the head unit. It allows you to play music from your iPhone while you charge it. I ran mine to the glove box in my 2002 C4S, so it was totally invisible. No soldering required!
To answer your question though, I doubt that most people have the skills or desire to attempt to tap into the circuit board. If you've got the skills, then go for it!
True. If you have the money for a Porsche, you probably have the money to just pay the man for an upgrade. Those who can DIY: Congratulations. You have my envy, and respect.
This is pretty neat! Yes, when you get to it definitely write up a nice guide with pictures. I'm sure some tech savvy people may find it pretty useful. BTW, beautiful 996 you have there. Congratulations on graduation and the move as well!
Oh damn, my bad. Just having a little fun with the Pelican gal.
And that's DTMiller who's now his wife's bitch, not me. You're getting your sleazeball attorneys mixed up.
Thanks guys! A co worker is going to lend me his soldering bench and some tools so hopefully I can show you guys exactly what needs to be done to make this work next weekend! I'll post a schematic of what is being added to make this work later today.

Sorry for the huge *** picture, I uploaded it from my phone. The pins refers to the headers on the USB input. Since the BT is already built into the USB board, you don't need to worry about that. The aux will be be kept contained within the becker casing, so you will solder the left, right, and common ground directly to the board like I described in the OP.
EDIT: Forgot to the mention that instead of a voltage regulator, you can use a buck converter. The converter is more expensive, but is a lot more efficient. For us, that's important because that means is will generate far less heat, all while remaining more compact.
This is the buck converter I will be using. This is about 10 times more expensive than a linear regulator. The linear regular can do the same thing as this, but it's very inefficient. Our input is 12v and out output is 5v. With usb 2.0 spec, the max current drawn would be 500mA. 7v * 500mA = 3.5watts. On a part as small as a linear regulator, the regulator would reachs temps about 250*F+. With a buck converter, you be generating around 5% as much heat as that.
Just waiting for the bluetooth to come in the mail and I'll be able to finish testing on a bread board then soldering into the becker unit
Everything works and audio quality is good! All thats left to do is remove the head unit, find the nodes I will be solding the power and ground to, and removing the female aux on the bluetooth board and soldering jumpers between the becker board and bluetooth board.
Also taking pictures for a DIY guide once I finish installation.
Got everything soldered in and was able to pair my phone and play music via BT. I'll write a detailed guide if there's enough interest.
What you'll be soldering too.
Everything wrapped up in shrink wrap. I decided to ziptie everything down using the cassette player mounts. You do not want to mount these to the walls of the head unit.
You could probably do everything external to the radio. I have the Becker cable that plugs into the back of the radio in place of the CD Changer. The cable has audio and power so you could probably make your gizmo and just plug it in instead of soldering inside the radio. You'd just have to find pin-outs and find a suitable connector. Make a bunch and sell them.
I wanted to keep everything internal since I do not have a glove box. However, making these connect to the pin is very doable. I already know what pins I'll need to utilize. These pin connectors are standard, off the shell parts so making these would actually be quite easy.
I will re-write a more detailed and in depth guide. I'll also offer to do this service for a small fee and/or make an external unit.
An external unit would make it plug & play which is a great advantage to people who aren't as tech-savvy as you are. Would you be able to come up with a solution that plays mp3's on a thumb drive?
Would you mind sending me a picture or link of said charging cable? If the plug it replaces is only the blue one, I'm very dubious it actually charges your phone. You can trick iphones into thinking they're charging by placing resistors on the D+ and D- terminals, when in reality the supplied power is so low, it's not doing anything.
I'll see what it would take to get a usb to work. Getting an audio signal shouldn't be too dificult, but I think what will be difficult is navigating through your music. By using bluetooth, I can use my phone to do that part. I'm a mechanical engineer, not an electrical, so this not my area of expertise. Just a disclaimer. haha
Must be a very convincing illusion because the iPod I keep in the car has been tricked into thinking it's been charged for the last 4 years.

The reason I'm asking about a USB connection is that I put a Pioneer stereo that has bluetooth and USB in another car. I put all of my music on a tiny 32gb USB drive and leave it plugged in. It's so small it's not even noticeable. Anyway, it's always there and doesn't require syncing or charging. Very convenient. I never use the bluetooth to stream audio anymore, only for phone calls.
The problem is that the radio wouldn't look right in the Porsche.
Ah, it has the green plug as well, which has a ground and 12v+ supply.
If I can get a second cr220 to mess around with, I might be able to make it work. Navigating through your music library is going to be difficult though.
I did this a year ago, no soldering or opening up required - I used:
Aux wire

The same bluetooth adapter

And this for power:

connect to loom with snap connectors:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5-x-Red-Bl...item2eca3dae4d
No need to open the head unit or solder anything! You will lose the cd changer though.
Just pick up switched 12v and ground on the headunit wiring loom witht he snap connectors
Plug the bluetooth into the usb power supply
Plug the aux wire into the back of your head unit and the the other end into the bluetooth adapter
Enable the "aux" input in the menu
Play music over bluetooth!
I also bought one of these a while back, but I decided it was too hideous to mount anywhere in my 996
Works reasonably well. I preferred the yatour unit though (despite folder limitations) as you can change tracks through the headunit).
The little Bluetooth USB dongle looks interesting. I would like to retrofit Bluetooth to my wife's SUV. The vehicle has a USB and aux in jack in the center armrest. Ideally,my he dongle would not only be powered by the USB port but also push audio into it. My guess is that it does not do so and I would need to connect it's audio through the aux in jack. I wonder if the vehicle's USB port has sufficient juice to power the dongle? It charges an iPhone so it may...
(this refers to the diagram on page 1) I thought a Porsche was a Buck Converter.
Cool mod. Gotta see if the Werewife (Miz Fixit) has a soldering gun and some extra patience. Lord knows I won't attempt this for fear I'd set the car on fire.
