Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Check oil' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check oil' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Replaced engine when they were $8200 and all has been good

After that you are going to have to replace anything else that might have been damaged by the excessive heat, like coolant lines, radiators, coolant pump plus anything plastic.

As he thinks it is running just fine, he may be running it far more than he should in its current condition which could mean he's had some heat issues that he isn't aware of.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey guys I'm looking at a 996 careers 4 with an engine problem. Owner says it runs strong but there's oil in the coolant. I did some research online and it seems that this could be a cracked cylinder head.
Any idea what this would cost to fix?
If you are a DIY guy and you don't replace/upgrade anything else during teardown/assembly, then maybe 3-4k if the head can be repaired. If you have a shop do it, I'd expect 6-8k.
In addition to the heads themselves, the whole system needs to be flushed really well. As he thinks it is running just fine, he may be running it far more than he should in its current condition which could mean he's had some heat issues that he isn't aware of. You'll also want to replace all the non-metal coolant parts since you don't know how long this has been going on and it will damage those parts.
Happened to me in 2009. Replaced AOS and cleaned cooling system completely in the hope that might work. Also checked oil for glycol and there was none. Three DE events later oil was back in the coolant. Replaced engine when they were $8200 and all has been good
If you have never done this before you will be looking at around 12-20 hours of labor to get the motor out and apart, then the cost of the head work plus the head gasket and other gaskets, intake exhaust etc. The real work is getting it all back together and in time, figure another 20 hours. After that you are going to have to replace anything else that might have been damaged by the excessive heat, like coolant lines, radiators, coolant pump plus anything plastic. If the guy has been running the car like this for a while there could be all kinds of hidden costs that you are going to find down the road. Most of the time problems with a cracked head originate from the piece of the plastic impeller on the water pump get stuck in the head and impede on coolant flow. So, in addition to the head work, the block will need a complete flush as well as replacing anything else excessive heat or disintegrated coolant impeller will have caused.
chances are it is a head gasket. you could perform a cylinder leak down test to help identify the problem. If it ends up needing a head gasket you will want to have the head magnafluxed to insure it has no cracks before re-installing.
here is a link to some of our
head gasket kits
1- These engines don't have any issues with failed head gaskets. These engines use MLS gaskets, which are stronger than the block, and head castings.
2- How is it possible to magna flux any component which isn't ferrous? Cylinder heads are aluminum (non- ferrous) and are therefore impossible to magna flux.
