Suggestion
When my switch was failing, sometimes HVAC wouldn't work; other times, the display would function but I could not get the fan to turn on / change speed.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It was cycling on and off but the controls did not work.
I have a 99 c2 with 100k miles. Yesterday The a.c. controller lights were not lit when I started car. Turned car off and the lights came on and AC worked fine. This morning same problem but this time no light after repeated attempts. No AC stuff working. Windows down!
Is it time for a new unit or might it be repairable?
Thanks!
Your symptoms are one of the more common problems when the electrical section of the ignition switch starts to fail.
Do a Google search for "996 ignition replacement" or "996 ignition failure" There are about 1000 threads out there.
The problem is most commonly repaired by replacing the electrical part for ~$15 - $100 depending on where you buy it, 4A0905849B. The dealer no longer carries the switch. Porsche changes the whole lock assembly (~$300) because they had so many problems with it.
Hey cinellipro, don't mean to hijack your thread but, coincidentally, my a/c / heater fan does not seem to be working, and this is coincident with my ignition switch acting really funky.
I turn the key to shut the engine off and the key is tough to take out, or the key comes out and the car chimes as it thinks the key is still in the ignition once I'm open the door.
So is my switch on the way out, and this could impact the HVAC controls?
To both posters, yes. The switch as fpb111 indicated can cause all sorts of havoc with the HVAC controls and other systems as well.
When my switch was failing, sometimes HVAC wouldn't work; other times, the display would function but I could not get the fan to turn on / change speed.
Replacing the electrical part of the ignition switch resolved all of these issues for me.
Thanks for the suggestions, I'll order the ignition part. I started the car earlier and the AC came on on its own but with no display. It was cycling on and off but the controls did not work. The next time I drove the car everything worked, LCD and all controls. Right now I'm at the everything seems fine stage. Cannot explicate that.
