I checked all my tires this weekend and glad to report that my oldest tire is from Oct 2013.

Suggestion
I had to replace many sets at around the 5 year mark because the sidewalls had become so hard the ride suffered and the tires had a lot of alligator cracking all over.

I had a road force balance done today on the car, as I was getting a slight shimmy above 75mph. The tech indicated the tires are 7 years old. Yes, I realize they are ancient by PS2 standards but the PO had not been putting many miles on the car prior to last spring when I purchased.
Do they need to be replaced now or can I wait till next season?
What concerns does the group have for a 7yo tire?

I recommend an autocross this weekend and then buy new tires.
Actually unless they show dry rot marks or other damage they are probably OK although hard as rocks.
FYI I change out my trailer tires every 5 years no matter if they are worn out or not. (different animal).
In general 6-years old is pretty much the limit even if they are new.
You should be checking the production date code to verify.

Agree with everyone so far. Sometimes it is mileage and sometimes it is age. 7 year old tires are very old. I had to replace many sets at around the 5 year mark because the sidewalls had become so hard the ride suffered and the tires had a lot of alligator cracking all over. Replace them now.
Can you educate me more on the production date code? I recently bought a set of tires for my Prius and the color looked really old even though they were new with tags and everything. I just want to see how old they really are.

Deterioration is mostly caused by UV light, much like our skin. To inspect the tire for UV damage & cracking, clean the tire sidewalls & tread area then inspect while wet. It's easier to see small cracks when wet. Check close to the wheel rim & between tread blocks. Michelin tires are most resistant to UV deterioration due to their superior rubber compounds.
A tyre which is in use ages far slower than a tyre which is static or in storage. Flexure of the tyre keeps the plasticiser in the tyre compound active and prevents the rubber from becoming brittle.
I'm curious. That is the first time I have heard that.
Do you work for Michelin?
Is there any data to support that?
I really am interested on that point as one of my Porsche sits outside and it coudl effect my tire choice
I too am curious, as natural rubber itself is not resistant to UV exposure effects, whereas other synthetic/rubber compounds probably reduce UV damage through UV reflective properties.

All the data I have accumulated since I went to work for the 1st of 6 tire stores in 1985. I sold a lot of Michelins but not as a Michelin employee.
Tire warranty expires when tread is less than 2/32nds" or stated number of years. Michelin is a year longer than most other brands.
