Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So, some of you may know I have gotten real addicted to the track real fast. Along with that, I have always enjoyed modifying my cars with race proven parts, The Porsche is great for that with the factory support and race cars they have produced, there's a lot of parts available. Not to mention the aftermarket - race focussed support available. I have been keeping an eye out for 996 Cup parts I could transfer over to my car and saw a car that was possibly going to be parted out and started talking to the seller about the stuff I was looking for - that was Monday. Monday afternoon I'm having a labor day/sons Birthday party cookout and talking with my Dad about maybe taking a drive to pick up the parts, he looks at the car - starts adding up the value of the good parts and says he's interested in buying....The Car... to part out. Spend the next couple days negotiating with seller and by Yesterday afternoon I was on my way to Philly to check out the car and if all was good - have it picked up and shipped back to MA today...and that's exactly what happened. The car was bumped in the right rear which induced a spin and put it in the wall with the front end, specifically front right taking the brute of the damage. The frame rails are bent but the shock towers / shocks and everything rearward is sound. Pretty cool to have a cup car in the Garage, the build quality and component quality is very high. Stripped of all emission/AC the engine bay is very roomy and being a race car that was regularly serviced, no rusty fasteners. Started into it a little bit tonight and man is it cool. Anyway, if anyone has any interest in any parts, feel free to reach out - I'll be posting a for sale add in a couple days. Also, if anyone just has anything they would like to see - let me know. And yeah, I may have pulled one of the parts I'm keeping off and started to get installed on my car...

POST 4Original post

Does that cup car have any Bob Holbert stickers or anything. He was a Le Mans winner , maybe was one of there’s ? He was a big time Porsche racer and builder in Philly area. Cool car.

POST 7Original post

Dude... Don't know what you paid for this car, but the previous owner probably has more money in those BBS E88 wheels and Pirelli motorsport tires, than alot of people have in their entire 996 cars. haha

POST 8Original post

Nice pick up, what are you planning to take from it?

POST 9Original post

Wow, sweet! I want pictures, lots and lots of pictures, and a video or two thrown in! No way to repair it and put it back on the track? Is the engine in good shape? It looks like the wing is spoken for. That's what I would have wanted from it. ...oh, and the mirrors!

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ill give everyone proper responses shortly. If someone could tell me how I need to jump the decklid connector so my abs/psm stops freaking out I would really appreciate. Working on cup car and getting my car ready for track tomorrow. don’t want to run my car without ABS. thanks and stay tuned.

POST 11Original post

Is the engine still good? What sort of work does the engine have done?

POST 12Original post

Wow. You ought to swap everything from that Cup car over to your C2. And I mean everything: ABS, engine, gearbox, rear suspension, driveshafts, wiring harness, the whole sha-bang. I don't have the Cup car parts catalog but I believe they run a detuned GT3 engine, ie, a Mezger designed engine and a G50 gearbox. If I recall the Cup Mezger's have threaded water pipes so the glued-in water pipe fiasco on the Gt2/GT3/Turbo does not exist. The G50 gearboxes are known to need rebuilds every 10k miles (at about $10k a rebuild) when heavily tracked. It may have a gearbox cooler piped into the water cooling circuit, I can't remember, the GT2 has this. The front suspension geometry is also different and I believe the front wheel carriers are GT3 parts, very hard to find. It should have the lightweight glass too, unless it's been replaced. The lightweight glass has been NLA for years. I have no idea why the rear deck lid wiring would trip up the ABS. Do you have a Durametric to check it?

POST 13Original post

The deck wiring is for the light, fan, and spoiler as far as I know. It shouldn’t affect ABS/PASM.

They're going with the motor. Exterior stuff that's good, roof, rear suspension stuff and some other odds and ends. It could have been repaired but would have been too costly. Would have needed front clip. Engine is good to go. Video coming once I can get some time to film.... been crazy. Yup, ready to rip. I wish, most of the parts are going to be sold - if this one goes well, I will probably plan to do a part out / restore once a year and snag some cool parts here and there. Well, thanks to Skip (Porschetech) who saves my *** every time I ask, it tuns out to be caused by the fact the main rear brake light is disabled when that deck lid connector is unplugged, he told me the wires to jump - restored the brake light and no ABS / PSM freak out when I started the car. So - I got a call last night from previous owner who had a friend who wanted to buy the gear box...and pick it up on Monday - I have a track day tomorrow. So I had to lump finalizing prep of my car with the below, it was a long day. Luckily - the race cars are a ton easier to work on than the street versions.

You might not know, these G50 gearboxes have a pull clutch. To separate the gearbox from the engine you need to go into that squarish window above your 2x4 and remove a retaining clip. Then thread a long M6 bolt into the clutch pivot shaft and pull it out. There's two needle bearings and some seals that should come with the clutch pivot shaft or can be removed afterwards. Once you have the clutch pivot shaft out you can separate the engine/gearbox like usual.

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I had an unavoidable commitment come up which made me unable to attend track day today - brutal. So, I got the trans off for the buyer to pickup tomorrow. Check out the RSR clutch.

POST 17Original post

Jason, what a great opportunity and experience to get your hands on this Cup Car. Not only can you pick and choose the parts that may be compatible with your 996 but a great learning experience disassembling and dissecting a really cool car.

I dont think he meant THOSE rocker covers.(valve covers/ cam covers) I think he meant Rocker covers / rocker panels / side skirts.

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16903133

Ha ! Yup. Well they are a little beat up and will be going on the black car scars and all for the moment. Id call them side skirts

POST 21Original post

I call them side skirts too. The guy who works in the front office at the body shop that painted mine didn’t know what I was talking about until I showed them to him. He called them rocker covers too.

POST 22Original post

What kind of shape is the front right wheel in? How about the front left suspension upright/wheel hub & brake caliper?

POST 23 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 16903164

Only got 3 good (race good, not show car) BBS. Right front wheel was destroyed. Left front looks to be OK but I have not spent a lot of time up there yet. Hopefully by the end of next weekend, all 4 corners will be stripped down. Calipers all look awesome, big and will be listed for sale soon.
