Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I just got my H&R springs and Bilstein Sport struts/shocks installed yesterday.

Don't get me wrong, it's in great shape and for a Ford, the paint is really clean (must be from parking it in the parking garage at work most of its' life)
Leading evidence: 'Install yesterday' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'good thing' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean (must be' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I know they changed ownership, but they do a wonderful job with customer care and technician's experience.

Emotions ran high when I finally found exactly the 996 I was looking for and lost (kinda) control.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Question - regarding the studs versus longer bolts when doing spacers, is there more strength / less weakness at the wheel hub area by using studs versus longer bolts?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All,
I'm fairly new - never posted an intro so here goes. I have some insights learned and hopefully some other users get value from this post.
Purchase experience:
Get a PPI and do you homework and get a warranty if possible. I read this forum and others prior to getting my 996. Emotions ran high when I finally found exactly the 996 I was looking for and lost (kinda) control. I bought from a dealer, had an 'informal' PPI by the mechanic (reputable P-car tuner in SF) who had worked on this car for 15,000 miles up to that point. It had 52K when I got it. I love documentation, but got minimal. Anxiety, yes. I did get a Carfax which showed the history and it checked out good. I DID decide to purchase a warranty for an extra $2800 (3yr 36k) at least for state of mind.
Work done so far / to be done:
Since buying it, I like to keep stuff up so 60K service, full brakes/rotors/pads/fluid, rear tires (Sumitomo HTR III's), and waiting in the garage are H&R springs, Bilstein Sport struts/shocks. light window tint tomorrow p.m. Oh did I mention a full tranny rebuild??!!?
, yeah, I can't hide that one....
The car is my daily driver (about 20 miles per day). One day, the tranny started slipping out of 2nd and I noticed the clutch pedal was fading. No problem, "I have a warranty", I thought... I took the car to Kahler's in Dublin. They REALLY went to bat for me with my warranty company. Originally the warranty company said they had no contract on file for me nor payment from the dealer.
"WTF, WTF, WTF", I thought. I had all my docs and promptly faxed them over to Kahler's who was helping me with the warranty co. It was probably a good thing to keep me away. Anyway, ONE MONTH < yes 1 month later after numerous, numerous calls I finally resort to an attorney. Simply calling him made things happen - both the auto dealer and warranty co quickly make things happen and "poof," tranny rebuild is approved and Kahler's does their magic and I got a new tranny
Kahler's is great! I know they changed ownership, but they do a wonderful job with customer care and technician's experience. I highly recommend them if you're in the bay area. At this point, the warranty has paid itself off nearly 2.5 times! I got the car back around 2 weeks ago; 6 weeks it was gone. Six weeks. In some wierd way, it was like Christmas to get the car back. I think you can appreciate that!
Question:
I've posted on some threads re: spacers. I am going to do 15's f/r. I want to do the studs as well. What size studs do I need to get? Any kits you'd recommend for this project? I've called and left Damon (Tirerack) vm's, but no call back. Is he a real person? :
Thanks for reading to this point!
Sky996
well done on the into !!
Love the Cab, nice set up and sounds like you are having fun making it your own. Glad to hear you drive it... sorry about the troubles in the past, but sounds like they worked out in the end.
Welcome to RL
Sky, Welcome to Rennlist and Congrats on getting a nice looking Cab.
The 15mm spacer both front and rear will work. Why not just buy longer bolts to accommodate the additional 15mm for the spacers? Stock length + 15mm and you are good to go.
Recommended mods:
Aluminum Gauge Rings
Aluminum Pedals
Bumber Plugs and Key Lock Plug (from Eric at Bumberplugs.com)
B&M Short Shifter (from Eric at Bumberplugs.com)
Upper cubby (shelf) to replace the cassette holder
Clear side markers (from Eric at Bumberplugs.com)
Perform an "amberectomy" on the headlights
That should get you started.
It looks like you have the short shift already which I think is the best bang for the buck mod. You should also get another cubby hole. I don't think your car has a cassette player.
Thanks! I did swap out the stock cd deck with an Alpine for iPod connection/controls so replacing the cassette holder would be good - I'll follow up on that! In terms of wanting to use new studs versus longer bolts, from what I've read, the studs is a better way to go - less PITA when rotating tires, etc.
Yes, it would be a PITA when you rotate tires, but you can't rotate the tires on the 996. You can rotate from side to side, but that won't help you any if you just do the left-to-right and right-to-left swap. The inside of the tires will wear faster than the outside and even if you swap from side to side the, inside of the tire will still be on the inside.
The only way is to have symmetrical tires and unmount them from the wheel and remount with the inside on the outside. To do that, you would probably go to a tire store and they would be handling the change out. However, if you are more comfortable with the studs, then that is what you should do.
Hey Sky! Congrats on the new ride - another sweet looking cab for the community... Tough to tell, is it Arctic Silver or Seal Grey?
Welcome aboard!
Rudy
The car is Artic Silver. I just got my H&R springs and Bilstein Sport struts/shocks installed yesterday.
The ride is suprisingly not at all diminished and it rails!
Question - regarding the studs versus longer bolts when doing spacers, is there more strength / less weakness at the wheel hub area by using studs versus longer bolts? While I'm not looking to take the car on the track but maybe a couple times a year, I just want to do it right.
Thanks for the replies.
Wow - what a great week!!! Well, better - since March getting the car back with the fully rebuilt tranny (1000 miles on it now; gingerly broken in), I got the windows mildly tinted a couple weeks back, then got the Bilsteins put on with the H&R springs, and just today put the H&R 7mm and 15mm spacers on F/R respectively. Damn, what a fun, great car. I totally see how much better this car is than my abililty; I can't wait for my first track day!!
Sky,
Yeah, only your universe is nicer than mine - my S'Crew is a full stock, dump-delivery truck now that will share occasional DD duties. Don't get me wrong, it's in great shape and for a Ford, the paint is really clean (must be from parking it in the parking garage at work most of its' life)
I see that people play with (mod) their S'Crews as much as they play with p-cars... maybe sometime down the line, after all the goodies are in the p-car.
