Sensor B typically refers to the exhaust camshaft side, while Bank 2 indicates that the problem is on the side of the engine which does not contain cylinder #1.
Leading evidence: 'on the side of the engine' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'on the side of the engine' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check plugs and coils and they were fine' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Sorry I mean he replaced just the lifters all on the driver side.

The runs up to redline maybe not so much - just in case it is a valve problem - the idea is to find out what the problem is BEFORE it blows up!
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

^^^ The Techron and a fresh tank of fuel (93 octane - Shell Nitro Plus or another high quality fuel if possible) can't hurt it so it's probably a good idea.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Good morning,
I have a beautiful 2003 c2 with 84k miles. For the last couple of months post 90k service it was running great. I daily drive it. Yesterday it gave me a CEL with code P301, so before I just ask the question I googled it and found it was bank 1. Well the shop I got the service done on gave me a warranty on the service so they check the plugs and coils and they were fine. They said there were some other codes in there for valve train. They think it's just dirty fuel and funked up lifters. My question is what else should I be looking at?
I will call them and get the other codes as well shortly.
Codes: P0391; P1371 and P1359
P0301 is a misfire on cylinder 1, Bank 1. Can I make a suggestion? Find a new shop/mechanic. So you had it serviced and they replaced all the spark plugs and installed the upgraded coils? Get all the codes. Should be a standard P0300 code as well.
Did you replace coil and plugs preventitively or?
If no code prior to service likely a spark plug gap, spark plug not tight or coil not snapped in fully
With warranty shop will handle these
IF no codes prior to service its not likely it just randomly happened post service.
This said it could be time for fuel filter and a bottle of techron. Injectors can cause this as can sticky lifters.
Let us know what the shop reports
In your title you said coils and plugs replaced. So I take it that this shop did the work. There are newer upgraded coil packs that should have been installed.
P0391
code definition
This is the generic OBD-II code for Camshaft Position Sensor "B" Circuit Range/Performance (Bank 2). Sensor B typically refers to the exhaust camshaft side, while Bank 2 indicates that the problem is on the side of the engine which does not contain cylinder #1.
Yeah I did them as a preventative when I bought the car. All fluids and spark/coils. Everything was great for last couple of months, I daily it and it drive smooth. One morning I drove it hard and it started shuttering and chocking and then it threw the codes. Since I got the car I hear tapping noise on driver side but didn't think much of it since the Porsche dealership who did the PPI didn't mention anything. So I think it could be lifters but I can be 100%. This is the only euro shop near by, the Porsche Performance shop is like 1hr away and dunno if I should drive it out there or not.
And the plot gets thicker... (now there's a "tapping noise"). Fwiw, while the lifters can and occasionally do get noisy in these engines, it's rarely the case that you have a "sticky lifter". More often than not, if you do have a lifter(s) that leaks down after sitting it stops ticking as soon as it gets filled with oil (upon starting the car) and the tap doesn't last more than a few seconds. There are other causes of ticking, tapping or clacking type noises that are not as benign as a sticky lifter... Perhaps you could record the engine on start up, and after it's fully warmed up (after a 15 minute drive) and post it up here. Also, do read the rest of those codes and post them as well. Hopefully it's not something to crazy and we can help you figure it out.
This is all I can find on P1359
P1359
- 911 Carrera Valve lift control, cylinder 1
You have a problem with cylinder 1...maybe a stuck lifter, or valve problem, causing the misfire and other problems. I would get the car to a Porsche specialist with PIWIS for a more complete evaluation...because you are looking at some expensive repairs.
A bottle of tectron, fresh gas and clear codes, warm it up and find red line a few times
Could be as simple as bad fuel or a sticky lifter which is rare
These cars are super sensitive to fuel
^^^ The Techron and a fresh tank of fuel (93 octane - Shell Nitro Plus or another high quality fuel if possible) can't hurt it so it's probably a good idea. The runs up to redline maybe not so much - just in case it is a valve problem - the idea is to find out what the problem is BEFORE it blows up! I'd think a few hard pulls up to 6k or so should be plenty to blow out the injectors without subjecting the valve-train to too much stress
Well yeah!!! But now is probably not the time to be testing limits... Start with the easy stuff and move on from there. The 1359 code seems to be related to the vario-cam solenoid. It's strange that you're not getting misfires on the other cylinders on that bank though (as you would think you would get if the solenoid is faulty). Use standard troubleshooting technique and go one step at a time and you'll figure it out.
93 only! I only use Shell, but I've got a couple close to my house. I would only use 91 if I were really in a pinch. I know in some places you can't get 93, so 91 it is, but if 93 is available use it...leave the 91 for the corollas...
Calm down. What you need is better information about what is going on. Not time to leap off the cliff. Are you a member of your local PCA Chapter, or know of someone that has Durametric to make a better evaluation? Might even be worth it to make that drive to the Porsche Performance shop.
Thank you all for your input. Let me get my hands on a place with a scanner that gives me more data and I will post.
Don't hate me but I also have a tip not manual.
Now it makes sence that u r under 4500
. Let us know what the short term fuel numbers are. This is a good indicator to see if u may have a vacuum leak. Also map sensor voltage through the rpm range. Map sensors r sensitive and tempermental.
Just an update. Had new lifters and seals replaced., On of the lifters was not seating properly. I will get the car this week and see if I can get pics. Also got a tone of **** replaced. IMS pro, RMS, Coolant tank, new hoses, T connector, shift linkage seal/gasket, motor mounts and a harness cover under the car.
$6k later. Let's drive this thing. Hopefully past 4.5k lol
The VarioCam+ engines have nested tappets and must be installed in proper orientation or problems will arise. There is a notch to assist with proper mounting and orientation.
Sorry I mean he replaced just the lifters all on the driver side. He didn't know what exactly was causing the failure. He mentioned something about blow by. 1 of 2 Porsche shops out here. He is great the car runs great. He did the IMS and Motor Mounts at cost of materials since the engine was out anyways. Great experience.
