Is it also necessary to replace the nuts on the top of the strut mounts?

Are you trying to replace the rubber part of the mount with s monoball ?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I also posted this in the 996TT forum. This is for a 2004 996TT.
I am getting ready to replace both of my front strut mount bearings over the upcoming long weekend. Is the press out tool and track rod extractor really needed for this job? Any other tricks or tips? I have the factory manual and have looked at a couple of youtube vids.
Thanks,
Kyle
Ive done top mounts on my C4 twice. Are you trying to replace the rubber part of the mount with s monoball ? If so, then yes youll Need something to get the center part of the bushing out. Seems like a lot of effort for little gain. I broke down and spent the $ on Tarrett camber plates. Elephant racing makes the quick change plates that are also recommended. Good luck
I appreciate the reply. I probably wasn't clear enough in my description. I wondering if I need the track rod extractor and press out tool to remove the control arm and track rod. Or will this just come apart?
The front suspension has 2 control arms on each side. Theyre commonly known as the coffin arm(because its shaped like a coffin) and the tuning fork (because its got a forked end that attaches to the coffin arm). No extraction tools are necessary to remove these... unless youre looking to replace the bushings in the coffin arms...
If you need to take the steering knuckle off you will need a ball joint separator. You do not need the Porsche tools, any ball joint separator will do.
This is the one I use:
https://www.harborfreight.com/3-4-qu...tor-99849.html
So, I've got most of the front end pulled apart. I can't get the freaking control arm off of the wheel carrier. I have a ball joint press and I don't think I can tighten it anymore before it breaks. I guess I'll try some heat to see if this works. I don't really want to pound on it with a hammer. Let it sit overnight with a good soaking of PB blaster. Is it also necessary to replace the nuts on the top of the strut mounts?
I just did this job a couple weeks ago and I reused the existing top mount nuts. If you don't have a ball joint separator of this style, do your self a favor and get one:
https://www.harborfreight.com/search...nt%20separator
If that's the style you are using and it is installed correctly, then keep tightening it - the ball joint will break free. The ball joint is held into the wheel carrier with friction. Once the tool is tightened down enough to overcome that level of friction, the ball joint will separate from the wheel carrier. And be prepared; when it lets go it will SOUND like something broke...
Thats actually called the tie rod end - good that you didnt pound on it with a hammer
glad it finally popped - that is a scary feeling, and final bang!
I read the post from Tom2769 about the keep tightening and itll work, saying to myself, Wait for it.... That is a scary, reverberating bang a lot of times!
Haha, I've frightened a couple of helpers that way.
I always forget to warn them.
I expect it and it seems loud to me.
If you're not expecting it, it sounds like a shotgun.
Got both sides finished up. Not a bad job really. The right mount was very obviously bad. Bearings were actually in great shape. I did replace both top strut mounts with new. Strange though, I have some side to side, up and down play on the left wheel. I know the axle is in all the way. I guess I'll need to take apart again to see what's up. Pretty sure it was not there when I started.
