Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Im wondering if a previous owner or shop filled those vacant cavities with some sort of gasket material.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All - A few simple questions for you that have been here before: 1. is there any sort of seal gasket that goes between the transmission and bell housing? 2. What is this rubber piece down at the bottom of the tranny and is it broken? What is its purpose? It looks like its in poor shape.

POST 2Original post

No gasket goes there, looks like a build up of clutch material and dirt.

POST 3Original post

Confirm...no gasket,no seal and I have no idea what rubber piece you are asking about.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Wow - this surprises me. The material in question is literally pliable and resilient. Im wondering if a previous owner or shop filled those vacant cavities with some sort of gasket material. Thanks for the replies.

No, I have it in mine and suspect it's just there to absorb vibrations. Just a guess though.

POST 6Original post

Bill is right, that material is there for sound/vibration deadening. Bell housings are know to "ring like a bell" and amplify noises that are typically normal, hence the reason Porsche changed to the toothed chain on the crank in mid2001. The double row roller chain is not as quiet as the "toothed chain"..

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys. Do you know what part # it is? I've searched a number of diagrams and can't seem to find it?

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Found this post from 2019 with the same question. Seems the rubber sound deadening piece is in some trannys but not all. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...llhousing.html

Interesting. My trans is out right now and does not have this material. I don't see a part number for it. Would it be a no harm no foul idea to coat that cavity with a thin layer of grease and fill it with some pliable RTV?

No harm, no foul, go for it !!!
