Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

Maybe a light on lower left side of dash that blinks when activated and can change color for city and highway...depending on model maybe in the front part of console.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

21 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello, Rennlist! - New member here. Just picked up a 2003 C4 Cabriolet yesterday. My first 911. Noticed this mystery item attached to the driver's side of the console under the dash. The outer **** rotates like a dial; the inner ring appears to have two positions. Have no idea what this thing is supposed to control. Does anyone have an idea of what this does? Thanks for your help!

POST 2Original post

Radar detector. I’ve got one too on my 2001 C2

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Aha! Makes total sense. Thanks!

POST 4Original post

Welcome to the group! And congratulations on the new car! These are seriously fun machines.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks! I'm utterly smitten. More speed helps, of course; but it's equally fun at 30 MPH. Nothing more effective at illustrating that point than climbing back into our Nissan Pathfinder!

Thats what our Honda Odyssey & 2006 Ford Mustang are for. I like driving them occasionally because then when I jump back in the 996, I am reminded at how much more fun it is to drive!!

POST 7Original post

Yep, outer ring for city or highway and center for intensity. Maybe a light on lower left side of dash that blinks when activated and can change color for city and highway...depending on model maybe in the front part of console. Expensive and good detector if still there.

POST 9Original post

Pretty sure thats the ejector seat. Dont wanna be touching that.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks, SVAZ! You don't happen to know the make/model, do you?

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Weazer - LOL, and here I thought that's what the throttle was for!

Eurocarguy911 - Dunno. I'm assuming it's aftermarket, but I really know nothing about the device—make, model, year, etc. Trying to find out specs so I can understand whether it's remotely effective against current day radars and lasers.

POST 14Original post

How do you gauge how effective these things are? The only time I used one, I got a ticket, many years ago when limits were 55mph. The detector blipped 2 times about 12 seconds apart. It was an airplane timing everyone across the 1/4 mile stripes. I wasn't aware of the tactic. Maybe I don't drive fast enough to need one. And I'm usually one of the fastest on the freeway

POST 15Original post

Aftermarket hard wired radar detector (K40) is the best $ I've spent on my 4s. 29,000 miles, many at high speed, no tickets, not even close.

POST 16Original post

Ive got one (see two ***** in front of the shifter). Has saved my azz a bunch of times.

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 17135725

Here you go. I've got the same one.

POST 18Original post

The K40 is great at verbally warning (a) location of radar signal, front/rear, (b) the type of radar signal, K band (automatic door openers/roadside speed signs, etc), X band, and the most dreaded KA band (police), and (c) the closeness of the source via the intensity of the beeping/flashing. Ive learned to trust it completely. Becomes a game of OK, i know youre there even though i wont see you for another 10-20 seconds. Plenty of time to slow down. Optional laser diffusers might be important in states where that is used.

[QUOTE=Bash Hat;17135980]Ive got one (see two ***** in front of the shifter). Has saved my azz a bunch of times. They beat me to it....see #17...k40. Bill

POST 21Original post

I found the same thing on mine a while ago, I assume you have a status LED somewhere on the dash - mine is in one of the button 'blanks' next to the HVAC control. Mine **** is missing the rubber, wonder if I can buy that somewhere
