Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Especially when you are comparing them to used cam tensioner pads.
Leading evidence: 'Use cam tensioner pads' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Can this tensioner be checked with the engine in the car?

I ask because I am having my engine bore scoped next week, and I might be looking at a repair of the chain guides that drive the IMS and cams.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Oil pan revealed some brown plastic bits and some metal shavings so I set to tear down the engine in search of the culprit. I see some good wear and tear on the variocam guides but not as much on the left and right bank guides. That leaves 1 guide remaining. How can I check the IMS chain guide for wear? Is it also doodoo brown like the others or a different color?
Thanks in advance.
This is not always the case! I am currently doing chain guides on my 04 966.2 and both lower guides on each bank are brown. Both uppers and the IMS are black.
If you unscrew & remove the tensioner right behind where it's located you can see it. Might need a inspection scope to see better. The tensioner is specific to that location & be sure it is the new improved version with the preload spring.
Can this tensioner be checked with the engine in the car? I ask because I am having my engine bore scoped next week, and I might be looking at a repair of the chain guides that drive the IMS and cams. Im having the bores scoped, not because I think I have bore scoring, but because I need to evaluate whether or not to rebuild the whole engine or just repair it.
When they age, they turn black just like the intermediate shaft one. The cam pads on the other hand are almost white when new and they turn brown when the get old.
Unless you have the intermediate shaft chain guide sitting next to it, they look black. Especially when you are comparing them to used cam tensioner pads. The debris that falls into the sump will have either really dark (black) pieces or lighter brown looking ones. It is very difficult to tell the difference between the intermediate shaft chain guide and the rails bits but it is pretty easy to tell if it's a cam tensioner pad debris or not.
