Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Couldnt find a thread on this so if Im double posting let me know He and his buddies rehabbed a 996.2. Needed a new trans. They fixed everything and painted it. Looked beautiful. And on the test drive blew the motor and trans. Interesting videos to watch.

They obviously did not fix the engine! Interesting? More idiots on the internet... boring

POST 3Original post

They definitely went about it backwards by not focusing on mechanics and making sure that's 100% fixed. It seems like they didn't blow the motor so that's not accurate, unless there is a new video I didn't see. The car's transmission had a cracked bell housing - very strange. They put in a new trans and same thing happened. My guess is the car might have been hit and the frame is bent causing extra stress somewhere. It was never fixed and the housing cracked again.

POST 4Original post

I reached out to James a few weeks ago to try and give him a hand with this project. It was very clear that this engine was suffering from bore scoring when they first bought it. From their episode 11 video at 8:55 Pat says that they are “having trouble lining up 8 bolts at one time...” This statement leads me to believe that the transmission bell housing was brought into and lined up utilizing the bolts. This will 100% cause the transmission bell housing to crack. From my experience if you do not push the transmission all the way flush to the engine before bolting it in, it can and will crack the bell housing. I think this is what happened to the previous owner from lack of experience and it happened again from the same thing... lack of experience. Unfortunately, in their case when the bell housing cracked the second time, it cracked the lower part of the engine case as well....

How was it clear? I honestly didnt people could diagnose bore scoring from a YouTube video without an invasive inspection. Could be great for prospective 996 buyers. James seems like a genuinely nice person and I was sorry to see this happen.

I second that. James seems like a very nice, genuine person. Sucks to see this happen to him. Severe bore scoring makes a very distinct knocking or ticking noise when the engine is running. If you listen or take a video behind the RR tire around cylinder 6, it can be heard. If the bore scoring is not severe, has just started or you want 100% confirmation of the noise, an invasive inspection is the only way to know for sure. However, if you have been around or heard enough cars with bore scoring, its pretty easy to tell from just hearing a engine run.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I enjoyed the videos. And the blue is awesome.

POST 9Original post

" How was it clear? I honestly didn’t (don't understand?) people could diagnose bore scoring from a YouTube video without an invasive inspection." Easily actually... What you don't seem to understand is the meaning/nature of a "diagnosis"... It's not the be all/end all - simply a "theory" and pointer to the next step in the process, which would be an invasive inspection (or in the case of a medical diagnosis perhaps exploratory surgery). In the case of bore scoring, there are several telltale signs - several of which are very telling and for someone with experience, are fairly foolproof. #1 - Ticking/clucking sound associated with the specific rhythm of a rocking piston. #2 - Soot on/in the exhaust tip on the opposite side of the bank from which ticking/clucking emanates... - of course, this could also be a ring problem, so it isn't totally reliable in and of itself, but it's an indicator none the less...

Ive watched the series on bore scoring and understand the symptoms. Thanks But Im not sure even the most respected expert on the matter would make a diagnosis from a video unless theres overwhelming evidence. What were symptoms displayed on the video that made a diagnosis of bore scoring very clear?

Seems like a nice guy, but my advice would have been to put the money into the engine and transmission rebuild before moving to the cosmetics (pro paint, duck tail wing, etc.). Function over flare! I haven't watched all of his videos, but did he mention what he spent on the paint alone?

Potentially a failing engine mount?

You can't help but root for the guy. The car is gorgeous.

i think they didnt have the tail pipe clamped on good, that connection is tricky. i was thinking the same thing when i originally watched the vid. like hey maybe you should have fixed the tail pipe then reshot lol. and yeah when they started that car up for the first drives it sounded really off. i think they said they only have like 10k total in the car. They got a hell of a deal on the paint

Two words... Click Bait. Nice guy? Eh, maybe/probably - that doesn't change the fact that there's no other reason to put this type of crap on the web besides getting people to click on it and sell advertising...

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 17141805

Yeah, I could see that - but not on this channel and not the way this happened. They fixed the things that to many people would already be too much to take on - but they didn't go quite far enough to figure out what caused the original problem - the very reason they got it so cheap.

POST 19Original post

Can't help but somewhat disagree here. You do know how youtube works right and that people don't create content and take on projects for ***** and giggles? You create content -> get views -> viewers are hit with ads -> channel owner gets ad revenue. It takes a lot of work to produce the content and it seems like that's not his sole source of income. He's also far from click baity where he has you watch a 10 minute video and gets to the point in the very last minute. The ad revenue, is more often than not, used to fuel the projects and cover the costs associated. Having said that, he seems like a nice guy that's into cars and has a decent mechanical support from his friends but as b3freak said, they went about it somewhat backwards by working on the visuals and skipping some of the mechanical issues that plague the 996. I'd love to see them take that money and tackle an engine rebuild with the help of FSI DVD set.

I'm curious as well - what would cause a cracked bellhousing (twice)? How can you misalign the transmission and still get it back together?

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 17143085

Clutch not set right, alignment pin slightly off and generally not paying attention. U can force a bellhousing down as they are aluminum and they will crack to relieve the pressure. If they put it together in the car its hard to see the alignment and easy make a mistake.

POST 22Original post

His channel is way too small to pay for this kind of project with YouTube revenue alone. I think it subsidises some of it, but I think most of the money came out of their pockets. I don't know if this has been said before, but I wonder if there isn't some kind of wobble on the flywheel/crank. This wil cause tension on the block and gearbox and would explain why the gearbox did not want to slide on.

POST 23Original post

He said he got some of the parts donated and got steep discounts on some of the work. Still, doesn't appear any way they will break even whether they sell it as a roller or complete it themselves.

Dude spends 5K on the car and puts a cool project on YT that I'm sure a lot of people would like to do themselves. I can't hate on a Porsche guy making content other Porsche guys like. As someone who puts content on YT, and has very few subs compared to the creator here, I give him props, getting 8K + people who want to watch your videos is a pretty successful Porsche focussed channel in my book. I'd say he deserves a pat on the back, especially when it seems like he's a nice enough guy, and I'm guessing he makes...like no money on YT.

I was thinking that too, as maybe he left out the pilot bearing but I looked at the vid where he installed the flywheel and it was there. Maybe JB Weld could sponsor him with a half gallon to piece/reconstruct the engine case and trans bell.
