After purchasing my car this summer, I had the IMS, RMS and clutch replaced at the shop and they used Mobile 1 0w-40 because thats just what they have.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Everyone, I promise this isnt another what is the best oil post, but I suppose it will still be to some extent. I have a 1999 996 C2 Cabrio and it has the usual lifter and ticking noises at startup. I know this is a common issue, and based on my research, nothing to worry about really. That said, has anyone had any luck with changing their oil brand or viscosity to help remedy this? Or at least improve it? Or maybe it is what it is, and the start up noise will be with me no matter what oil I use? I suspect the latter is the case, but thought Id ask anyway. After purchasing my car this summer, I had the IMS, RMS and clutch replaced at the shop and they used Mobile 1 0w-40 because thats just what they have. I live in Michigan (hot summers, freezing winters) if that matters and I drive it year round. 77,000 miles on it currently. Any advice based on personal experience would be appreciated. And my apologies in advance for asking an oil-related question, I know these types of threads tend to go off the rails sometimes, but hopefully my goal here is a bit more specific than most and will be helpful to others.

POST 2Original post

I usually add ceratec to my first oil change of the year after my car comes out of cold storage. I've used ceratec in my other cars before and I find that it quiets down the motors quite a bit. There aren't any negative effects IMO of adding ceratec and it's cheap enough to try.

For what it's worth the official Porsche Classics motor oil for the 996 is 5w-50. You can order it online from multiple vendors, or another brand of your choosing.
