The 406 was replaced mid year (thus the '63&1/2 moniker) with the 427 and Top Loader 4 speed along with the Sport Back roof line.

I'm sure the a/c will keep it nice and cool inside and it's nice to have the option of dropping the top in the evenings or if I'm running the coast line.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Picked up this '99 from a friend. Has 65K miles but new engine at 40K. Has Brembo brakes & rotors, stainless exhaust, wheels, shifter and some other mods.
This is my first Porsche. Had a bunch of Vette's, a couple 350Z's (and a 240Z many years ago), even a Miata and am still a hot rod guy ('34 Ford coupe, Deuce sedan, Model A's etc) and currently have a '64 Catalina 2+2 and a '63&1/2 Galaxie 427 - 4 speed car.
Have always loved Porsche's even as a kid but they were always a bit out of my price range and never had much exposure to them although a buddy had a 930 Turbo in the 80's that I drove once. My uncle has a 996 Turbo which I've driven a couple times which is an amazing car but again, I just figured it was too much $$ for me.
Last year I visited him at his New England house where he keeps a RUF cabriolet and got to drive that a couple days. What a wonderful car that was! It really got me hooked and after discussing Porsche's and doing some research I decided I'd look for a 996.
I wanted a coupe that I could mod a bit (can't keep the hot rod in me from coming out! LOL) and possible track it. I wanted one just a little rough around the edges that I didn't have to worry about keeping spotless, a bit of a "beater" that I could thrash but still be reliable.
Just when I started looking, a buddy of mine picked up this one owner car. The PO lived next door to a guy that ran a Porsche race prep shop so he had all the mods done but never raced it or tracked it. The guy was an accountant that just DD'd for a few years then got a BMW and parked the Porsche. It was last registered in 2006 but was started on a regular basis.
When my buddy got it about a year ago he had everything checked out and serviced. He put a couple thousand miles on it with no issues then offered it to me at a great price as he knew I was looking for one.
It is really a little "too nice" for me though, almost too pretty.
And even though I'm in So Cal most of the time, I wanted a coupe not a convertible because I like the look much better. I think they look more "racey". I am also not crazy about the silver color. I like a color with more pizzazz: red, green, blue, yellow, black, anything beside boring silver!
But, all that said, I'm pretty happy with the car, especially considering what I paid for it. I drove it over the mountains to Palm Springs last weekend and it performed wonderfully and with the top down you get that fantastic exhaust note, especially when the revs come up! It could use a little more power though. It does have decent torque but not like the big V8's I'm used to.
And speaking of notes, it has an aftermarket stereo with a couple big amps in the trunk (or what ever you call the front of the car) and a huge sub-woofer box that takes up half the back seat. I hate stereo's that have tiny little buttons that I can't figure out!
I went to a stereo shop today to have them rip out the sub box and one of the amps. They will put in a nice easy to read tough screen head unit for me. I probably won't listen to it much anyway as this is not a DD and will mostly use it for bombing around on the back mountain roads and I'd rather listen to the engine noises.
So, very impressed with the solidness of the car, handling is great although a bit different than a Corvette, makes wonderful sounds, extremely fun to drive. Not crazy about the looks of the car, especially the front end. It is very bland looking and too Boxsterish looking.
I'm thinking about looking for a hard top for it as well. That will give me the coupe look and I can always take it off if I want a convertible again. Not sure what else to do to it. Coat the wheels black maybe?
Going to look for some local Porsche club events or get togethers to meet other Porsche folks and get some ideas. I'm near Temecula, CA in south west Riverside County so near North San Diego county and Orange County if anyone is around there.
Welcome to Rennlist! Beautiful car! I wouldn't be so down about it not being the perfect one and go out enjoy what you have. Trying to make it something that it's not, would only foster more dislike in it's core design which is a cabriolet, not coupe. I understand your points, but it seems like you settled for less than you really wanted. I would have advised you to wait and buy an equally affordable coupe version. The convertibles are designed for that very reason... to be OPEN cars and so buying the hard top is fine if you prefer, but the ball cap design of the optional removable top hurts the overall look of the 996 but it does give you the interior feel of the coupes. In my opinion, it looks better the way it was really intended.. that is a convertible for warm months. I personally wanted a cabriolet because my family prefers to "drop the top" as much as we can. However, I completely understand why people would prefer the coupe for lots of reasons, but if you're not completely happy, then maybe you should use this car to trade for the one you really want. I love the Arctic Silver Metallic which is probably one of the most common Porsche racing car colors, IMHO. If that was my car, I'd probably remove those chrome wheels and go with something more OEM like the carrera II or Turbo twist wheels. Your interior is the nice Graphic Grey and I like your particular design better than mine. My Cab is an 2003 and the interior was all grey with no distinction, but your console and some other items are painted black which looks really nice. And so, go out enjoy it as much as you can and if it's a keeper, than find out the service history and begin looking for ways to extend it's life. Cheers!
Looks like a nice machine - very clean. I'm a new owner as well (you can see my recent thread), and I also didn't want an overly "nice" car that I'd feel the need to baby and pamper.
Cabriolet is probably a ton of fun in California. I've owned convertibles before but I now live in Chicago aka Chiberia so I figured it wouldn't make a ton of sense. But in the end, unless you want to wait for a long time you simply buy the car that is for sale.
All the best, enjoy the windy roads. I haven't yet taken mine off the city streets but I'm already loving that weight distribution through the corners.
Thanks for your input. Makes very good sense (although I think I settled for more than I wanted!
). I think other than replacing the stereo head unit, I'll just leave it like it is for now and see how I feel about it as I use it more.
Thanks! We definitely have convertible weather here year around and usually when I want open air driving I'll ride one of my motorcycles.
Also, it can get pretty hot in the summer with the sun beating down on your head. I never ran the clear tops on my Corvettes because of that, just the painted tops. I guess I'll just leave the top up in the summer when it is too hot. I'm sure the a/c will keep it nice and cool inside and it's nice to have the option of dropping the top in the evenings or if I'm running the coast line.
(Sorry about your cold Chicago winters!
).
First, congratulations on your P-Car.
It looks great.
When I read your post, you said you had a 1963 1/2 Galaxie 427, 4 speed?????
My father had one when I was very young.
427, 425 HP 2x4 barrel Holley carbs.
My dad's friend had a 406 tri-power.
Just curious what color is your Galaxie? I have never seen or heard of another one than my Dad's.
congrats and welcome "neighbor?".......Temecula resident here since '95. Looks like your car is also Arctic Silver/Metropol blue so our cars are "almos"t twins.
P.S. There are a few of us in SoCal (SD, Orange and Riverside County).....just need a GTG to happen someday.
It's Wimbleton White with blue interior.

They are very rare cars. A lot of people think Detroit had nothing until the GTO and muscle cars came out but late 50's early 60's had some fast cars. I like the early big engine cars because everybody and their brother has a Chevelle, GTO, Camaro, Road Runner, etc. but you don't see a lot of the earlier stuff.
