Just disconnect the hose from to the HhResonator, take a piece of a thicker plastic bag and put it over the opening, re-attach the hose and clamp it all back = nice sound, suddenly screams at over 5k rpm.

Those who have used or are stilling using the orange cap mod, what are you feeling toward this mod? Positives or Negatives? I know it is purely for sound and not hp gains. I have a stock setup, would it be beneficial to try? Thanks!
My only engine mods are denso iridium sparkplugs (IK 20s) and the cap. The sound is definitely an enhancement, especially at WOT. If you don't expect more power from this and want your motor to snarl, then it is a no brainer as a warranty safe mod.
The orange cap coupled with my GHL loud's sounds great! It's amazing how wonderful intake sound is! Mod is easy, takes 5 min. and the caps were free! Someone should have the link, I forgot where it is.
Tell me, tell me guys! There must be a side effect!! The cap is preventing air from flowing to a hose, what that hose doing there in the first place? It seems too good to be true!
If I remember correctly, all it does is block airflow to some sort of chamber or baffle that's designed to make the car quieter - but I may be wrong on that. There were plenty of discussions about this some time ago, just search for "orange cap" and it should come up.
Interesting... I just ordered some free samples.
BTW, I ordered 4 so anyone in the GTA can get one from me if they don't want to bother ordering one...
All the orange cap does from my understanding is blcok of the small chamber in the airbox that is actually used as a"muffler" to make intake sound quieter in the cabin.
No change. You get the cool sound at WOT mostly. Gas flow will always take the path of least resistance. By plugging airflow through the silencing baffle, all the air goes through the big conduit directly through the MAF as opposed to some of it indirectly. I don't feel faster, just sound better. Just $.02.
Has anyone had any of these melt? As my grandma said, there is no such thing as a free lunch... And yes these plug samples are free, but they are not made for high-performance engines in mind. If I'm not mistaken, they are just freaking plugs for shipping/storing cardboard tubes... I'm sure the perceived engine sound improvement is cool, but soon forgotten (and not cool) when listening to the service tech telling you how some orange gunk killed your engine, and how warranty has been revoked...
Just a thought. I don't mean to offend happy users of these thingies.
Has anyone had any of these melt? As my grandma said, there is no such thing as a free lunch... And yes these plug samples are free, but they are not made for high-performance engines in mind.
i prolly had 40k miles on my cap when i removed it prior to the buyers ppi. looked good as new and indistingusihable from the new sample on hand.
I took a 1 Liter Coke bottle and cut the neck off., I cut the seal ring off for safety. Put the cap on and inserted it into the intake tube( non-capped end cut to diameter of lip in small intake tube) and put it back together. I have PSE so hard to notice a huge difference in sound; but it is deeper and throatier fom approx 4k up. Now I am waiting for the Real Thing.
Please tell me you are kidding. This is not a car to have a coke and a smile in your intake. ESPECIALLY is you have PSE. Rather have a coke and a heartache when you are fishing plastic pieces out of you intake system and the bill that comes with that. If you want deeper sound get a louder exhaust or bypass pipes.
I am still baffled on this one.
I put one in last summer. Very nice sound at WoT.
I removed the cap in January when I took the car into the shop for an odd engine noise. The engine had to be replaced due to a main rod bearing failure. Not the fault of the orange cap. I kinda forgot about the cap since I got the car back. Think I'll put it back in. Thanks for the reminder mdillian3690.
When I had it in, my friends couldnt tell a difference, but I could. So it is not a loud sound.
To answer your questions:
Positives: Can hear a nice rush of air coming from the engine at WoT. Free.
Negatives: I have a cheesy orange plastic plug in my air intake system.
Try it, quick and easy.
-Darren
Mitty, No problem. I ordered two samples and can't wait to try it also. I wouldn't mind having a little bit of deeper sound and better throttle response. Eventually, I will get a cold air intake system.
p.s. In MI it is snowing! sucks!
The portion of the Coke bottle and the lid are not going to go in the engine. I am positive of this. The orange cap fits perfectly which is great; it is however a piece of plastic subject to the same forces as my section of plastic bottle. I appreciate your concern. I have been an aircraft mechanic both for major airlines and fortune 500 corporations for 20 years, it is my nature not to leave things to chance. My Coke bottle works until I can find a substitute or my orange caps come in the mail. I am thinking of milling an aluminum plug. I thought some people that were orange capless might like the Coke bottle DIY.
Oh please, save the "fortune 500" lines for somebody else. Those that have to spout off like that are only that much more second guessing of their comment to begin with.
My take is one of my personal stance on this. I have no desire to wedge a piece of $.25 plastic in the intake of my $100K car. Result? .........Then we will just have to agree to disagree. Listen, like I said already, if you have PSE (or the like) then why in the world do something like this.
BTW, what in the world is a hacked PSE?
LVDell....the Orange Cap can actually make the PSE sound better. Hard to believe, but before I had the SC I had the O-Cap and PSE and it sound better w/the cap.
I don't get the first part of me unsure of spouting off. The "hacked" PSE is , wait I am going to deliberately destroy part of my $110k car,are you sure you can handle this? I took a relay out of my car, took it apart and cut a diode connection, reassembled and viola'. PSE is on all the time with no speed sensed cut out.
Stan you are quite the wisecracker aren't you? If you can't understand my post then there is nothing I can do for you about that. As for your PSE...that is a common hack that alot of people do when they have PSE ordered with the car from delivery so the 30-45mph cutoff goes away just didn't understand the hacked addition to your sig. It sounded like you created some "new" PSE (others have tried to create their own PSE) which is why I asked.
Anyway, nothing that you have said is going to convince me to jam a piece of plastic into my intake. Simple risk-reward analysis and I chose not to. Simple as that. Enjoy your plastic in the intake mod.
Kirby, I am sure it sounds better, but once again, PSE sounds great to begin with and my stance is why risk any possible damage by jamming a piece of plastic in the intake?
Oh well, I guess this is a thread for those wanting to do this mod and share info about it.....so, if I have offended anybody sitting out on my island alone the I truly apologize.
Stan, nothing personal, just trying to understand this better and so far nobody has given anything other than "it sounds better" to justify it. Trust me, I am a mod junkie but this just raised all kinds of red flags for me.
For the record, I haven't been able to find one post on anyone's engine ingesting the cap. I tried all kinds of search criteria. "orange cap catastrophe" "orange cap destruction" "orange cap anti-christ" and I got nothing back. TEE HEE.
LVDell, no offense taken. I am a smart a$$, sorry from here if warranted. I wish I could create a new PSE; then I might have enough $$ for a Carrera GT. You are right to be careful about what you stick in your engine and your ears ( nothing sharper than your elbow or a Q-Tip). Maybe subconsciously I am trying to destroy my engine so I can go crazy with the rebuild. My wife would never understand how part of a Coke bottle got into the engine and smoked it. What is a mystery to her would further my cause as it being a fluke and a million to one odds that something like that could happen. An overhaul would be in order with suitable steps taken to gaurd against any such unfortunate accidents that might occur in the future. Hence a good foundation to approach the rebuild angle; certainly with aftermarket parts that could withstand the rigors of an ingested plasic bottle i.e. RUF, Andial, etc.. Now that the engine dillema is solved, what about the tranny............Anyone know any mods that I can mod?
Hey Dell...
This is so funny!!
Like you said to me (about what to me is the funniest thing in the world a Porsche car owner can do, i.e., ) doing a clear bra, is a matter of personal preference. I respectfully submit so is this orange cap...in the end...does it really matter. If it blows air up their pipes well, that's kool...
Jim
I guess I can concur with that but the diiference b/t the clearbra and jamming a piece of plastic in the air intake is two totally diff things. Like I said, to each his own. I ain't doing it.
ok...so aside from ordering one from a website, is there another place i could try? like goto lowes and buy a bunch of caps and see which one fits? i'd much rather goto the store than hassle with online ordering and shipping for a 25 cent piece of plastic
I used to do that on my bike when I was kid. I must have had 10 cards on my Schwinn...I also used to put WD40 under the left hadle bar grip so I could pretend I was throttling up on my Harley!!!
Great memory!!!
Remember the VROOM motor? It was a plastic motor that bolted to the frame and made motor noises. There was a kid in my neighborhood that had one and (I am not making this up) he was allowed to ride in the street because of it!
Yep. I remember it but it was after my time on a bike. I rememebr jamming an empty coke can above the brake caliper so the edge hit he tire and that sounded pretty kool.
Who needs to buy a device? By high school my buddies and I could imitate many a different motor at idle by mouth in much the same way today's youth provides bass for rapping without the boom box. My specialty was the cammed 454.
I decided I would try this out and ordered two of the caps from the link in this post. Took all of two minutes to order the part and it did not cost a dime. I have never been able to get in and out of any of those home improvement stores in under 20 minutes. I buy everything I can online now. It is so convenient and saves so much time. My local P-Car dealer parts manager has a real attitude and it very pricy. I know order all my maintenance and other parts online also. I just call up and five minutes later I am done. Usually takes about a week to receive the part, but I rarely need it before then anyway.
I will check how it fits and decide whether I want to try once I get the cap. I have PSE but want to see how the sound with this compares.
To LVdell A bra can damage your paint due to poor installation or removal. The orange cap is harmless. The Germans had to meet certain noise standards so they put in a baffel chamber. The orange cap just blocks the baffel. Right on JimPDX
Unfortunately, Swiss noise laws have made the ROW suffer via Weissach universal design. Blocking off the baffle in the airbox for a zero $ investment could be srutinized as better use of capital than a PSE for a similar sound enhancement goal and equal neutrality in performance gain. I for one admire the ingenuity of the first Porsche owner who figured this out. He was the kid with playing cards in the spokes vs. the VROOM device on his bike. We are all just children at heart.
::background::
the wrx has a recirculating blow off valve - which means the air released gets routed back to the intake, so when you let off the throttle you don't get the cool "whooosh" sound of those aftermarket turbo cars.
anyway, i unplugged the recirculating hose and shoved a rag in it instead, so the air vented to the atmosphere. car ran like **** but made that cool sound. i had it like that for about an hr before i got annoyed with it.
this is what the orange mod reminds me of....ahhh the days
Sorry to join the party late, but i hvae a question. Is this "baffle" a heimholtz resonator?
These resonators are added to the intake tract to both quiet it and actually increase torque. IIRC they are sized to equal the volume of one cylinder in the engine. Somehow they help "pulse tune" the intake so that it creates a subtle ram effect in the intake charge. I'd bet a buck that's what you guys are plugging.
Anybody know what the plugged resonator is actually designed to do? Are folks sure it's only about quieting the intake?
Has anybody dyno'd this change before and after?
Apologies if this has already been covered.
Oh, and you guys are hacks. I mean that as a compliment
Having had an '02 WRX, I used a silencer delete elbow in the airbox which cost money as compared to the free orange cap which is more applicable to this thread. Venting metered air out of your BPV to atmoshere to sound fast and furious is a little different being that it confuses the ECM and messes up your A/F ratio having a detrimental effect on performance. Apples and oranges, IMHO. I equate your analogy to a kid who puts bricks in his spokes vs. playing cards.
WRX Silencer Delete Elbow
oh i know it confuses the maf. i was just doing it for fun =P. i removed the intake silencer but didn't buy that elbow piece. believe me, my wrx was already too fast and furious for me to want it to sound any faster lol. i could turn lap times several seconds faster in the wrx than i can in my porsche now.
btw, i accomplished the same thing as the elbow piece by simply cutting off the resonator part of the silencer, sealing off the bottom, and using the upper piece as a connector for the front scoop that leads into the fenderwell.
Yep, I'd love to see a dyno. Looks like a heimholtz resonator to me. I'd wager you're losing a bit of torque in exchange for the sound. I removed a very similar resonator on my old Miata and lost a bit of power. It sounded cool, though.
I wanted to move up in the world, so I removed my Coke Bottle ( orange cap)( actually red cap). It has been replaced with 2 Stainless washers with a bolt through the center. The washers bolted together sandwich the airbox and seal off the opening. They are identical in size to the opening and the tube then fits over it perfectly. My mod, sans orange cap. LV Dell; I used an aircraft grade bolt and lock nut for safety.
. I thought to myself, " self, why would you let a simple piece of ingested plastic, orange or otherwise ruin your engine?" That is why I went with stainless, it will total the engine. Just like Dad always said "Any mod worth doing is worth doing right." Now I can have a Coke and a smile. Now, what's this I hear about cards and making the engine louder? Is it a D.I.Y. ?
Incorrect. Heimholtz (sp) resonators are on post combustion gases only; hence exhaust "pulses".
The pulsating flow from each cylinder's exhaust process of an automobile petrol or diesel engine sets up pressure waves in the exhaust system-the exhaust port and the manifold having average pressure levels higher than the atmospheric. This varies with the engine speed and load.
At higher speeds and loads the exhaust manifold is at pressures substantially above atmospheric pressure. These pressure waves propagate at speed of the sound relative to the moving exhaust gas, which escapes with a high velocity producing an objectionable exhaust boom or noise.
A suitably designed exhaust silencer or muffler accomplishes the muffling of this exhaust noise. The basics of silencing can be understood by recalling a few principles of physics. The velocity of sound in the gas at a given temperature is directly proportional to the square root of the product of the pressure and the ratio of the specific heats (at constant pressure to that at constant volume), and inversely to the square root of the density of the gas.
As the temperature varies, the velocity also varies directly as the temperature by another square root law involving the product of the coefficient of thermal expansion of the gas and the temperature. The exhaust noise can be reduced appreciably by providing resonance chambers to offset the noise wave effects.
This is accomplished by the principle of the Helmholtz resonator. In principle, it comprises the exhaust pipe, which goes through the large volume of a chamber.
The axial holes in the exhaust pipe enclosed by the chamber allow the gases to vibrate with the large mass of the gases in the chamber (forming a spring-mass vibrating system) and generate the sound of the same frequency but in opposite phase to that which has to be nullified (called anti-sound).
To achieve this the muffler volume should be proportioned to the engine piston displacement, and inversely proportioned to the engine speed and the square root of the number of engine cylinders. The usual length to diameter (l/d) ratio of the resonator is about 4:1 to 8:1.
A small l/d ratio muffler attenuates the sound well for a narrow frequency band, where as the large l/d muffler attenuates the sound to a lesser degree but over a wider frequency band. The effectiveness of the exhaust system in silencing the exhaust depends also on the relative lengths of the exhaust pipe (from the exhaust manifold to the muffler) and the tail pipe. A ratio of 1:2 is better than 4:1, and 1:1 is the poorest ratio.
Since the narrow frequency range limits the resonant chamber application, other features are incorporated in the resonant chamber to produce friction effects and filter off noise effects of other offending frequencies. Provision of baffles, resonator mufflers with end baffles, resonator with centre baffle chamber and four-chamber muffler are illustrative examples. In early stationary engines, muffling of the sound was accomplished by allowing the gases to expand by changing the direction of flow or by cooling them with injected water.
Also, the Fabspeed version of the orange cap mod boasts increased acceleration from 3,000-6,000 rpm which can only come from more power.
"Better throttle response and power gain you can feel. - 100% Guaranteed.
.42 seconds faster acceleration 3000-600 RPM with BMC F1 airfilter, major improvement in power and acceleration that you can feel!"
Reanimator: I appreciate the effort, and perhaps Helmholtz resonators are used to tune exhaust pulses as well, but they are absolutely used in intake systems. I spent a bunch of time in the Miata tuning community, and removing this resonator (on the intake) would lose about 5 lb-ft at lower RPMs, which mattered in this car
You would get a placebo effect of a high-RPM rush that made it feel faster overall, but the hole in low end torque was obvious. My guess is the resonator in the intake box has something to do with tuning the intake frequencies. I'd also wager low end torque is being lost, but our cars make so much power that it may not matter to you guys.
Here's a random link I googled:
http://www.mecc.unipd.it/~cos/DINAMO...suonatore.html
Here's one that talks about the "active helmholtz resonator" in the new 997 3.8. Since it's in the top of the airbox, like the one you guys are messing with, my guess is we can agree that we're dealing with tuning the intake tract using a helmholtz resonator...
http://www.germancarfans.com/news.cf...porsche/1.html
Here's another one that talks about the intake-path resonators. They say they are all about noise cancellation, but that hasn't been my experience...
http://autospeed.drive.com.au/cms/A_1969/article.html
Thanks for the debate on this. Can't speak for Miatas. It appears Fabspeed has specific data on NA 996 airbox increasing acceleration when the resonator is removed. Based on your link, it also appears that Porsche has a patent pending on a Helmholtz airbox resonator on the 3.8 997S motor. It also states that this new design is for noise. The other stuff talks of intake runners for increased performance. Varying intake runner length and diameter in multiple stages is not new technology. BMW uses similar venturi variability in their runners. This other stuff is related to the intake after the MAF. The 996 silencer is before the MAF. The patent pending intake noise suppressor on the 997S is between the MAF and the throttle butterfly. The links you provided actually support that the 996 airbox resonator is only for noise suppression, which is exactly why we are plugging it up so the intake air will flow more freely into the MAF unsuppressed. Thanks for the links. It is nice to know that the Weissach boys are still coming up with useful noise suppressive technology.
"Helmholtz resonator for unmarred sound
The new, individual-control Helmholtz resonator accommodated in the air filter housing is a typical feature of the acoustic refinement that has gone into the new power unit of the Carrera S. This acoustic damper offering approximately 0.3 litres of additional resonance volume is integrated in the intake system between the hot-film air mass meter and the throttle butterfly. The Helmholtz resonator is activated when accelerating between 5000 and 6000 rpm, reducing oscillations of the intake noise under such conditions within the 260 Hertz frequency range. Porsche has already registered this new system for a patent, the new 3.8-litre power unit benefitting as a result of this technology from a deep, throaty sound under all engine loads and at all speeds, without any aggressive peaks."
Yep, I realized that my links argued that the resonators were primarily for sound.
As far as Fabspeed's claims, I've got to admit I'm biased. I've seen way too many false or "aggressive" claims from tuners selling intake systems to believe that beating Porsche at their own game is an easy task. I take any claim by a tuner with a huge grain of salt. Did Fabspeed plug the tube because it made power, or because it sounded like it did?
Based on some other digging, I've found that the Helmholtz resonators can also be "tuned" to increase power at a certain point in the rev range. That must be what was happening w/the old Miatas -- there was a big torque hole if you removed the intake resonator.
I agree that this is an interesting debate. Neither of us really knows whether the unit in the 996 is there for only noise suppression, or if it also serves to smooth the power band. It would be interesting to hear it from the guy who designed the intake for Porsche. Intakes these days are pretty carefully tuned parts of the entire system -- a far cry from the old days when you just threw a K&N on and went faster
I would still really love to see a before and after dyno. Maybe I'll do it just for grins.
Interesting. If you dyno, I'd like to see a lot of granularity in the 3300-3600 RPM range. It may be my imagination, but I believe there is a slight surge in that range (my only powertrain mod is GHL mufflers)
Yup, I certainly wouldn't argue that the infamous cap does anything power wise. It just sounds louder and subjectively cooler in the higher revs. Thanks again for the research.
Also, I can understand why they went ROW on the intake design for Swiss noise laws. Hard to drive around Western Europe without going Swiss. It sure takes a lot to get American cars in there.
"Importing American Vehicles into Switzerland
Successful discussions between officials from US Embassy, Bern and the Swiss Federal Office for Police Matters have led to new procedures which will greatly facilitate the importation of American - made cars, sport-utility vehicles and mini-vans.
After the car arrives in Switzerland, the sole testing requirement is a noise test, which can be performed at one of four testing stations in the cantons of Zurich, Vaud, Geneva, and Ticino, for Sfr 240. For model year 1995 and thereafter, the EPA label on all US-manufactured passenger cars will satisfy Swiss exhaust emission standards, with the exception of some vehicles that bear the EPA light-duty truck label. These are classified under the most stringent Swiss and EU exhaust emission standards. Parking lights and turning signals, should conform to Swiss standards, the speedometer must indicate Km/Hr, tires should conform to the top speed of the vehicle, and windshields must be laminated. The owner is also responsible for providing certain data on the engine and dimensions of the car. Apart from these requirements, no additional testing is required."
Importing a car to Swiss land
That does it. I demand an inspection on all imported Swiss Gruyere and dark chocolate. The inspection station will be in Portland, OR. Details available here.
I am in Portland again this week, car is in Seattle. I will post ASAP when I get back home. I drove down to PDX last week in the P-car. I-5 beat me to death. I am in the truck this week, much more compfortable not to mention more intimidating to the slow drivers in front. I feel the extra noise from the mod definitely sweetens up the sound especially after 4k rpm's. Blends nicely. If I remember correctly the washers are a shade over 1.75" and the bolt was 2.5" long. I opened up the air box and put one washer ouside an one on the insie and bolted together. The bolt head is on the top. The nut and bolt are aircraft hardware, the washers are everyday stainless ; some extra hardware in my shop/garage, I work on planes for a living so I had it laying around. For some reason I always end up wiith extra hardware after working on a plane....... You could cut a circle of aluminum to fit inside the resonator tube against the lip. A stiff piece of plastic or metal cut to fit in the resonator tube is all you really need. The size of the piece is not going to allow it into the intake. If it falls into the airbox it still won't be able to go through the other side. Maybe you have a 5 liter bottle of Cabernet , open it , enjoy a glass or two aand presto chango you have a large cork that will work. If you do have a 5 liter Cab. call me and several people and we can come over and drink and I'll supervise the mod , glass in hand.. If you are really desperate you can duct tape it or a 1 liter Coke bottle......... Sorry about the poor DIY written, I cheated in Technical Writing in college.
StanSoph, I look forward to your pics. Thanks! By the way, my orange caps came in. They are not a solid has i thought they would be. I will try the mod this weekend. But wouln't mind a more solid mod.
My orange cap came in yesterday, and I installed it last evening. Took about 6 -7 minutes. I agree with mdillian3690, I thought the cap would be a made of a firmer plastic. Took the 996 for a "run" last night to listen for the difference in sound. I only noticed a difference a "heavy throttle." Sounds nice!
Carrera Mike - Why did you opt for the Fabspeed set up? What was the cost? To be honest, I didn't even know about the "orange cap" MOD until this thread was posted. Hence, when I saw your "permanent" Fabspeed set up, I was a little surprised. I still have "tons" to learn!
Gota, Actually the kit that I have in the picture above is for a 997. It was just given to me by my buddy VB997 who switched to the Evo setup. Since the 997 is fairly new, Fabspeed doesn't have the mold yet of the airbox, instead of the muffler block off elimination plate that's included with the 996 kit(picture attached below), they just give you this plastic cap for the airbox muffler.
It serves the purpose for the 996 although removing the muffler from the air box will give it more breathing room or more airflow. This is accomplished by that piece(muffler block off elimination plate) that actually comes with the 996 cold air kit which eliminates the muffler.
Anyways, my opinion is I don't think it's really a cold air kit since as we all know, our air boxes has multiple drain holes in the bottom which hot air can be sucked in. Additionaly, my $0.02, this red instake hose is just too expensive for $225
good thing it was given to me. With my limited resources, I would rather spend that money on a DE.
Well I installed my Orange Cap on Friday afternoon. It took less than 10mins. The sound was pretty cool at over 4k rpms.
gota911, hey I am glad u felt the same way about the make of plastic for the orange cap. I think I am going to leave it in for a while and check the cap for warpness after sometime.
I just took the air filter apart to plug the hole instead of using the plastic cap to be safe. However, what I found was this muffler only has one hole which is connected to the intake. In other words, there is no direct air flow from the chamber to this pipe where we are trying to plug using this plastic cap.
See the attached picture I just took and you will see there is only one hole.
If I understand what you're saying, then this is by design. The helmholtz resonators are of a carefully calculated volume, and are "teed" off of the intake path. Air doesn't flow through them.
Ok so to settle this, based on what ubergeek found, there is no way a cap can be sucked through into the intake??????????
PS- the cap off a small gatorade bottle fits exactly when turned upside down and inserted!!! Maybe we should call this the GATORADE mod??
Bumps it up to a current post on the forum. Also it means will anyone frickin answer the question???!!!! Thus again, So based on poster "ubergeek's" findings (when the airbox was taken apart) THE CAP WILL OR WILL NOT BE SUCKED INTO THE ENGINE IF IT COMES LOOSE??
Hey. I just put in the OC. I didn't hear much difference... and wasn't looking for anything else, but DAMN if I don't feel better throttle response at low RPM. Even the dead spot I've been hating at the bottom of 2nd gear at WOT is gone.
Thanks Jim!
Why?
Because if it did become dislodged and sucked into the intake, it would get stuck in the throttle butterfuly valve before it went into the intake manifold. it is also too big to fit down one of the runner tubes. Where the cap is in the airbox, it is not hot enough to melt the cap, and it is assumed that the cap was inspected for tears or holes before it was installed.
But never say never, I would think that one of you reading this will figure out how to get one stuck in the engine
I think you pretty much need to go WOT to really hear it, but with the system you have which screams real nice already...I'm not sure you'll hear much difference. Interesting on T/Response however, you are the second or third person who has said that.
The Gatorade cap does not have the same lip as the orange cap, so it would be more likely to get sucked in. I installed the cap a month or so ago and only noticed a small difference in sound. I thought it would change the sound alot more with the PSE switched off, but still didn't sound that much different. Still not sure which sound I prefer better. I am not really worried about it getting sucked in based on how it fit in the hole. It seems like the lip gets compressed between the air box and the pipe, which should make it much more solid.
Kris
Makes sense to me I guess. There is less air that requires a velocity change when you open the throttle. And I'll reiterate, it was the last thing I was looking for. I travel the same route every day at the same speeds and experience the same response from the car. This was clearly different.
Resurrecting a very old thread. Anyone happen to have an orange cap laying around, or know of a replacement that will work? Please email me if you do.
Thanks,
Chris

A 1-1/2" pipe cap works great for sealing the airbox and taking the Hemholtz resonator out of the circuit, but really more for use in conjunction with an silicon intake hose... The silicon hoses can be had inexpensively on eBay.
Love the intake sound!
If you get an aftermarket intake silicone hose, technically you don't even need to put a cap on at all since the resonator chamber is already sealed from the rest of the air box. The cap is more or less used to keep stuff out of the chamber.
The Fabspeed version actually has a cap assembly to fully replace the stock resonator chamber to gain additional interior Airbox volume.
Just ordered a black silicone hose off ebay for $20, too bad its shipping from China and is going to take two weeks to get here. I'm so impatient once I get an idea in my head...
Planning to cap the helmholtz resonator with one of these (recommended on another thread):

If you know what length/Diameter/Bend Silicone tube you need, these guys are great. I've bought several for my M3 over the years.

Got my hose off eBay for $20 and a cap from Home Depot for $8, sounds great combined with the gundo hack. Gives it just that extra bit of growl, now I'm very happy with the exhaust sound.
Cuda 911, you don't have a cap - the part you have actually removes the resonance chamber and adds usable volume to the airbox. The Orange cap mod does not have the ability to do this.
CJ fr LA & ALPIN0003 & PFBZ....what is the line going to the top of my air box housing tube, the part that would be replaced by the black silicone hose? I like your set ups & would like to try it, however what do I do with this emission maybe hose thingy? Maybe air sensor? Did u guys have this & what did u do, or does it do?
thanks as always

I have x51 and on x51 or Tip you have that hose you need to go to auto parts buy a crank case breather and stick it on end of hose like my picture and you are good to go.
I did this mod today to my car. I was little skeptic about the result's before, but this mod really changes the intake note. Had a stupid grin on my face after the first over 4k rpm wot pull
I did my own plug that eliminates the chamber from the airbox, but uses the stock intake pipe for stock look. Nothing need's to be modified, just plug and play..
The problem with doing it this way is that the air from the vacuum line could have an oil mist to it ,which will then have to flow past the MAF sensor. I think Porsche specifically put that line after the MAF for a reason. I am still trying to figure out what that line is for, on the Tip & X51 cars.
Just had to apply a cheap hack to try out if I'd like the sound. Just disconnect the hose from to the HhResonator, take a piece of a thicker plastic bag and put it over the opening, re-attach the hose and clamp it all back = nice sound, suddenly screams at over 5k rpm. I might go for the more permanent solution (or take a nice black bag instead of the white one)
^^^ I used a rubber glove to test it first too. Only had it in there for a week but the glove was deformed from trying to be sucked into the intake. So be careful not to get that plastic bad sucked into the engine.
Its the breather from the gearbox and thats the OEM place to put it? althogh as you say it is after the Maf as opposed to before it.
there is no oil resdue from the pipe ever!.
buy a silicone pipe for the 996 from ebay for 20 bucks
Pull out the resonator
Cap the hole using a wing number sandwich plug that you can find at lowes in the plumbing departement...it actually looks cool too. This plug is red aluminum that has a fat rubber gromment that you ratchet down with the wing nut and it sandwhiches around the hole and hole opening...totally air tight. If you are afraid of the wing nut working loose just put a lock nut on top of it....
The whole mod costs $25 bucks. Its the exact same mod some are selling online for 200. I did it...I will try to get pictures if I can.
Good find 33Jacket. I saw your post/pics and yes it looks great I just ordered my silicone hose (E-bay $23.00 shipped) and ill be getting the plug from Lowes Hardware today.
No, it's already there from the factory. You just need to remove two bolts from underneath to remove the resonator chamber. This will yield you a little more volume in the airbox assembly.
ok before I go screwing something up, after reading and seeing all the pics posted this is the onlyone I see with a small breather? Is there a diffrence between the 40AE and the others? is there something i need to know? any info will be great thank you in advance. BTW i have all parts except the small breather.
Where can I buy the orange cap? I looked on Niagara Plastics website and search for item number 273 and nothing comes up. looked on ebay and amazon too.
Someone should sell them on ebay.
I did the 'orange cap' mod so I could observe results for myself. The following describes my experience.
The Install
Remove 3 hose clamps holding the intact duct to the throttle body (1) and to the air box (2). Gently remove the duct.
I used an Edge shaving cream cap. Firmly press it into the duct where the duct goes into the left air box opening. It will be snug but will go in as far as the ducts shoulder - 1/2 to 3/4".
Trim the excess cap even with the duct. I used a hack saw and cleaned up with a razor knife. Don't nick the duct.
While you're in there, douche out the throttle body. I used throttle body spray cleaner and a couple of paper towels. Repeat as necessary.
The modified hose duct will fit right over the corresponding air box outlet.
Carefully reassemble watching for potential air links.
Observe Results
Sound - Yep, sounds way cool. At more than mid-throttle and above 4K rpm, she sounds like she means business. Way cool.
Throttle Response - Here was my first indication that all may not be well. The throttle feels notchy - over sensitive both on throttle and off throttle. SOrt of like when you were first learning to drive. Hmmm.
Mileage - Fuel mileage immediately dropped 10-15% in street driving. More Hmmm.
Power - lacking a chassis dyno, I can only say that it feels a little stronger.
The Why
Apparently Porsche engineered the little bypass to reduce intake noise. Good for daily drivers, not so good for enthusiasts.
In so doing, they apparently adjusted the tune since only a portion majority) of air flows through the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor.
Our 'orange cap' bypass now sends 100% of the air through the MAF. IMO, this results in an overly rich mixture.
My Conclusions
I took the 'orange cap' out after a week and returned to the stock configuration. Sound is cool but not at the expense of efficiency.
I might try it again at a track day to see if it helps my lap times. Hard to believe a richer mixture would generate more power. Lean makes power (within stoichiometric limits, of course).
Questions
When you put in yout cold air system, did you have to put a new tune in your ECU? It seems to me you'd have exactly the same issue.
What is the recommended cleaner for the MAF sensor? I figure hosing it down with the right product might be a good thing.
^^^ LOL. Do you even know how the system works? Did your even allow enough time for ECU adaptation? Only on Rennlist are the enthusiast so clueless or ocd that a simple orange cap mod thread goes through multiple pages of mud. I truly am ashamed.
Everybody starts out nice until the same stuff gets onto page 11 for something so simple. Imagine if you had to explain how to turn on the computer to your mother several times. Your tone will start out ok and if she still doesn't get it 5 hours later, you will most likely find yourself shouting.
Something is wrong with your car other than the orange cap mod if you're car is acting weird from that. No one else afaik has had any issues.
Either way you were able to resolve your issue. It's just that you won't have the cool sound like the kids with cards in their spokes any longer.
Thanks for the thoughtful reply, Alpine.
FWIW, I'm not a newbie - the 996 is my 5th Porsche over 25 years. ANd I do all of my own work. But the 996 is ... different.
There doesn't seem to be anything "wrong" with my car as it runs like stink, gets respectable mileage (20/26), and I track her on occasion.
May I ask how long it takes the ECU to adapt to significant changes? I figured a week should allow it to adapt, but it clearly hadn't. I assumed it was because of some hard limits Porsche built in and possibly that the MAF sensor doesn't see ALL airflow, only a portion.
Are you sure you checked all connections to make sure there wasn't any leaks? One thing you can do if you feel like diagnosing it is to get either a Durametric or an app like torque for Android with a Bluetooth dongle to read and log the MAF readings with and without the mod. They should be very similiar.
OR just replace the factory intake hose with a silicone $30 ebay one. That way you don't have to worry about sealing off the smaller Y hose reducing any install errors. This is what most are doing.
Thanks again, Alpine.
I'm pretty careful but a leak is always possible.
The cheapest silicone hose I can find is $79.
Do you have a source for the cheap eBay unit?
Hmm, all the air is going thru the maf, even with out the cap mod.
The hose that goes to the airbox, connects to helmhoz resonator and does nothing else than reduces intake noise.
If your car is running lean, there is leak in some other place.
Sorry if you all ready said it, but how did you check your afr's?
so the end resume? is it worth spending 300-400$ for a kn cold air kit, or this mod does the same trick? (more noisewise, don't believe in power gains just by swapping an air filter)
IMO no, it's not worh it. Stock airbox is good. You can use kn filter inside the stock airbox.
Remove the helmhoz resonator completely from airbox, this will make it flow litlebit more. No I don't have test results for this, based on my experience only.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-996-...178bf3&vxp=mtr
It also comes in Red, Yellow, Orange, Blue if you want additional HP.
Sound is the main reason. There's been a little improvement shown if you get the silicone hose, remove the resonator box for more air box volume, and get a drop in filter element. That's the best and most economical bang for the buck setup IMO.
I have tried 4 different intake setups. Currently running Evoms but really the combo I listed above is the best bang for the buck and has been dyno'd be a member here to pull in very similiar amt of hp with an otherwise stock setup compared to aftermarket systems. Of course intake companies will have you believe otherwise.
