Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

He drove it around, kept it overnight to check for leaks and released to me earlier.

You probably need to change plugs, tubes and seals.

What were they going to do, replace the valve cover because it was leaking?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

You probably need to change plugs, tubes and seals. There are good referances on how to do this but don't be fooled into thinking that this is an easy DIY. Pretty complicated but very doable if you remove the mufflers. It will give you chance to check your coils as well.
Hmm, this is interesting. I've got a similar leak on my left bank. Mine doesn't drip on the header/exhaust manifold though. I just assumed that the valve cover is leaking (it's not a big leak, a few drops per day maybe). It's actually leaking a little bit more now, as I've had the front jacked up on stands for a few weeks in the garage now. It may be time to jack the back up a nd pull the mufflers off to check the spark plug tubes...
Update: Sneaky Pete and Hurdigurdiman were right. Indy changed out all spark plugs and tubes, cylinder head plugs and the cover piece with seal for the camshaft adjuster solenoid. While there I had him install the LN spin-on adapter, oil filter and magnetic drain plug. He drove it around, kept it overnight to check for leaks and released to me earlier. Cost was half of what dealer quoted with incorrect diagnosis. Nice!
I had the same leak on my boxster, mine appeared to be a cam cover. It was very minor and I had just let it be. It was irritating smelling it though as it dripped on the header. It was on the left side on my car too.
"Dealer advised it is the left side valve cover that is leaking and quoted $1,522. Will be taking to indy on Monday for 2nd opinion."
Hence the term "Stealerships"... scumbags! What were they going to do, replace the valve cover because it was leaking? Jezzzz...
Leaking cam covers is a common 996 issue. I had one bank resealed on my '99 as part of the "nail everything down" service I had done after purchasing my '99. Of course, I was paying indie pricing, not dealer pricing. I considered ignoring it, but having oil all over one side of the engine makes it hard to spot other issues if they crop up, and stuff just gets caked with dirt.
That repair is 99.9% labor and a few bucks for the sealant, so if you're paying dealer service rates, it's a pricey job.
The dealerships definitely like to pump the well for as long as they can. I make a decent living, but I don't think I'd keep the 996 without a good indie and decent mechanic skills of my own...the car doesn't need a ton of work, but I can't imagine paying dealership book rates for routine maintenance.
