I would suggest getting to know a local mechanic or repair shop with Porsche experience and get their advice on both the market and perhaps some available cars.

Guys, question on total mileage....assuming the odometer is clean....lots has been said about IMS failure and possible linkage to cars that are under used....what would the general guidance be on an '03/'04 in terms of total mileage or mileage per year?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

With respect to my question 1 - problem solved through the Porsche Club in Germany.
Hey, i've been lucky enough to be able to afford a porsche 911 996 C4 at the age of 19. I have been trying to read as much as possible and improve my knowledge around porsches, especially the 996 model, however due to my lack of experience in years i still think it would be wise to get tips and advice from people that have owned a 996 for several years.
My main concerns are what i should look for when buying a 996, and what is the optimal 996 as for milage/year etc , i would like to keep it to a 2000+ model.
- I know i should look for RMS
- Shifting problems
- Check servicebook and talk about earlier problems if any/ brake changes stuff like that
What else could you guys contribute with to me as to me buying a 996, any advice and tips would be greatly appreciated.
Daniel
Having a Porsche as your first car is tempting, but you have to ask yourself the following.
How my insurance will compare if I just buy a plain Jane Bimmer 3 series.
Do I have an extra $5000 to spend for things that may need to be required after purchasing.
Do I have the skills to do basic maintenance, what level of DIY are you.
Can I alocate $3000 or less a year for maintenance or unexpected Porsche expenses.
This are the basics and I know others will contribute with more, is not about how cheap you can you get this cars, maintenance and parts are expensive. By the way is a 911 not a 991, the 991 is the replacement of the 997. Sent from my iPhone using Rennlist
I am lucky enough to have very nice parents, but i am by no means spoiled. I have worked my *** off saving upto 5/6th of the cash myself for the car of my dreams since i was 13, my parents were nice enough to give me another 2/6th, so right now i got a good 7/6th cash to be able to buy a porsche+ afford insurance and still have enough for maintaince or upgrades. I consider myself a enthusiastic porsche owner if i get one and will take care of it regurarly.
When it comes to PPI i'm not sure how it works here in Norway, so i must be able to learn myself and cover a whole inspection to be able to get the best car for the buck which is why i signed up on these forums
Thanks for the advice though, i will look further into several expenses that can occur throughout the year of owning a porsche, however my heart truly lays in one of these no matter the costs.
You have earned it, go buy it !
Step#2 Join the local PCA club.
IMMEDIATELY GO TO A DRIVER EDUCATION EVENT
Step #3 enjoy the wonderful car experience that is Porsche !
You seem humble about it so that's cool... But holy crap a 911 as a first car is a terrible idea, your parents must not REALLY know what they are agreeing to help you buy.. These are SUPERCARS.. You can very easily get yourself in a LOT of trouble. My fist car was a modified RX7, even that was really way too much car for a novice..
Good luck, be safe, and thank the Lord your parents were born before you were, you are contemplating a car I finally in my 30's was able to afford to own and maintain...
A Porsche for your only car in Norway... Awesome! I can only imagine that the number of available cars is relatively small. I would suggest getting to know a local mechanic or repair shop with Porsche experience and get their advice on both the market and perhaps some available cars.
Good Luck!
Thank you for the kind words
! I am to be honest not interested in the "status" that comes with the car, neither am i interested in showing off and speeding. This is just a childhood dream for when i first saw a porsche and now that i finally am able to achieve it and give it a checkmark on the list of "to do", it means the world to me! Mark my words when i say i will take good care of it haha, however i am hoping to be able to upgrade models as i progress in knowledge and get older by increasing my cash flows, maybe to a 2013-2015 model wayyyy into the future that would be sweet!
Congrats on your first car! You are a hard working lucky lad!
Obtaining a drivers license in Norway is not as easy as in the States. In the end it is pretty costly compared to North American standards These kids tend to be a bit more responsible than the YouTube stars we see over here.
Good luck with your purchase and enjoy the ride!
Hello and I think you will do just fine if you remember an old carpenter's saying..."measure twice and cut once." Make a plan. Take your time and give yourself a set of programs.
1. Look at and drive cars for the next three months. Get a good sampling of the different conditions of the cars as used and serviced by different owners. Decide if you will be able to find a car you like locally or will you have to consider buying a car from outside your home area.
2. Find who you want to service the car for you (yes even before you buy it). Go around to different dealer shops and indies and get a measure of the people you will be dealing with.
3. If this will be a year round driver for you then I think you must focus on a C4 with all wheel drive. Plan on having a second set of wheels with your winter tires mounted on them. If this is only a fair weather summer car than a C2 will be fine.
4. Put together an itemized budget that includes the purchase price, taxes, insurance, plus $5000 for the unexpected as well as the first year's maintanence costs. Make a firm decision to live within this budget.
5. More important than the mileage or specific year is the documented history of the car and the condition of the car. Take nothing on word value, everything must be in writing. Now that you know who you want to service your car, that is who you want to do the PPI.
6. There are thousands of 996s in the world so do not buy a car because you don't thinik you will
not find another one like it.
7. Beware of aftermarket modifications.
8. IMS, RMS, AOS, all these and much more will be discovered in the service history and PPI.
9. Another old saying..."buy cheap and pay twice."
10. Take your time.
When looking at the "price" of entering the game, never overlook the cost of staying in the game.
Best thing I have read on this site. The purchase price is truly minuscule in comparison with what you can spend keeping your car running properly in the years to come.
The insurance will be listed on my parents which is completely fine here in Norway. It would come out on about $2000/month if it was on me, but since it's on my parents it will be around $800/month which is perfectly within my reach and budget!
Thanks for the ultimate 10-step guide haha! Very appreciated, and i got plenty of time towards summer which is when i have planned to buy the car so until then i will have 3-4months to check out plenty of 996's. As this will be a full time drive, i'm getting a C4, and most of the sellers here offer a 2set wheel tire within the sale both for summer and winter so that will be included
.
Not to step on PorscheKid95's thread, but I'm also looking for some guidance on a '03-'04 996 C4S.... Greatly enjoyed the multiple threads on 996 pros and cons, and found an enormous amount of information from a very knowledgeable pool of enthusiats, so here is where I welcome some guidance... I'm a New York guy, but currently living in Frankfurt Germany on long term assignment. Always been a Porsche nut, but being here, where the bloody regularly things roar by you at 150 mph on the autobahn makes buying one a real must. My questions...1) Can anyone point me in the direction of a reputable independent Porsche specialist? 2) Does anyone know how big a deal it would be to federalize (DOT/EPA) a Euro Spec 996 C4S if I bring it back to the US when my posting ends? I have more questions, but will stop here for now.
Guys, question on total mileage....assuming the odometer is clean....lots has been said about IMS failure and possible linkage to cars that are under used....what would the general guidance be on an '03/'04 in terms of total mileage or mileage per year? Would a 996 C4S covering 4k to 5k miles per year be a concern as a car that sat too much? Converesly, would a car turning 10k to 12k make it a high mileage car? Any thoughts on where the trade off would be?
Yeah, my parent went to a wedding there last year, and commented on the crazy prices.... $15 cups of coffee and such. I can only assume that the pay rates there are higher too.
OP, I'm really not a whole lot older than you, if you think you can afford to purchase and maintain it,
go for it!
If you're willing to give it proper preventative maintenance(P.M.), the car is a smart investment as well...
Cheers,
Rob
I personally never equated with milage with the IMS issue. The key to buying a car that your plan to enjoy driving...a lot...is to find one with the best service history that is confirmed by your PPI. The milage might have value in a resale situation, but for now don't think of that, focus on getting a great car at a fair price that will give you the most pleasure.
RE: importing a euro-spec car to the US - you may find that the answer is state-specific. I know, for example, that it's essentially impossible to register many/most RoW cars here in California. You might want to check your home state's DMV site to see if they have information on this topic...
Danke 5CHN3LL....I think Cali, as usual, is the exception, as their State standards are more stringent than Federal, but I do not believe that is the case elsewhere...yet. Regardless, I will do my homework as suggested, for the when and if scenario.
great advice.. my first porsche.. well VW was a 914... I got the lead for the car thru a indy., I was 17 and was having trouble with head gaskets on a TR6.. so I visited the local indy shop for advice - they honestly told me that the the triumph would always be a.. well.. a triumph and mentioned a 914 that may be sale... so a sold the TR and bought the 914.. the 914 could take a beating.. so began my quest for a 911.. well finally at 54 years old I am now a 911 owner... bought one last week.
Long story... but best of luck to Daniel / PorscheKid95 - and visit your local indy shop/s..
At least they quit charging the "foreign" car import tax - CA used to charge a hefty "smog impact fee" for importing a car from another STATE, even if the car was 50-state emissions compliant. I don't remember the amount precisely, but it was in the hundreds - which was probably about half of what the Ford Tempo I drove from IL was worth.
The court also conveniently ruled that the state had no duty to inform people that the fee had been ruled unconstitutional and should be refunded - so you had to find this out on your own and submit paperwork to get the $$$ back. #*#&ers.
