Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello I own a 2002 996 cabriolet guard red with savannah beige interior. I had the convertible top head liner replacement because it was sagging and catching on the roll bar trim. The auto top repair man noted a cable in the back left part of the top was not attached to the frame. This is not the tension rope that attaches on the front of the top runs across the window frame to the back of the top. This tension rope attaches from below the engine bay area to the posterior top frame under the window. For reference the tension rope part number is 996-56119100 and this attaches to the roof strut 996-56104100( per my review of the parts diaphragm). The end of the rope that attaches to the strut has the ball part of the socket in it and this has threads. There does not seem to be any threads of the strut so I think there is a nut inside the strut to screw into BUT when you put the threaded portion in the area it doesn't screw in. I am thinking there must be a nut inside but how do you access this area? The mechanic who replaced the headliner ( 30 y experience and many classic cars) thinks the whole top might have to be removed. The top closes and opens perfectly as the left side cable is properly attached. Any further help would be greatly appreciated

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes. That is exactly the problem area. In the strut on the diagram you can see the ball /screw in the strut. Mine is in the end of the rope( socket ).... having pulled out of the strut. How do you access the back inside of the strut to fasten /screw/tighten the screw into the strut.?

I am eager to repair this area and attached bolt with ball on end to the strut but unsure how to access the area? Surely someone must have taken the ab top off and knows how this area is accessed TY
