I started at the top of the car and worked in 14x14 sections, I kept the steamer about 7-10 inches from the body and let it generate enough steam to moisten the surface, I then used a damp cloth to remove the haze/dirt.

When final drying the car I used a quick detailer to lubricate the drying towel.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Ok so I drove my black beauty to work yesterday despite the forecast for rain. It was 67degrees and I couldn't resist. Well it rained and apparently dirt and mud emulsified and proceeded to douche my car.
Well the weather has turned rough and the temp has dropped.. I will probably be stuck home tomorrow and really would like to spend some time in the garage restoring the paint to its former glory.
Well I was considering the 3 bucket method, when I thought back to my OCD engine detail days.. I have a handheld steamer, this would cause very little water on the garage floor, has anyone ever steam cleaned their car 1 panel at a time?
I have seen detailers use steam only, but am not sure the actual method..
No offense as I have OCD car cleaning habits.......How cold could it get in Nashville
Quick trip to the local wash and back in the garage and begin work. Done that many times here below freezing. Probably much better than water on the garage floor that you will track around etc.
Just my Denver .02! Happy OCD Thursday
I usually rinse the heavy stuff off at the car wash with water, then I use a waterless car wash product in the garage. The one made by Griot's Garage works well for me.
Gator's the in house detailing expert.
I use the ONR too but like others said, I'll take it to a spray wash first if it's quite dirty or has any salt on it. If it's just a light film after the spray down, I'll skip ONR and just liberally spray on Ultima Waterless Wash Plus and wipe it down. If I do the ONR, I'll follow it up with Duragloss Aqua Wax during the drying process to retain the slick protection factor.
Everyone's regimen will be slightly different but all will generally focus on products that emulsify and lift dirt in some way outside of traditional car washing.
Did a little test.. I used steam to loosen the grime, kept it lubricated with a damp microfiber. Came out amazing, no micro scratches!! No soap, just a quick detailer before drying.
I just ordered that last night....looking forward to trying it out.
Like Alpine said, if the car is salty, I'll take it over to the self-service car wash and spray it down first.
without question, GATOR is the in-house expert of detail, but he has really been slipping lately on hi AVATAR. a car??? what's up with that??? U were my idol...were u censored again????
Yes, I have indeed been "counseled". Believe me, it hurts me as well. I think I have ran the car avatar for a full month. Spring is in the air so let me see what I can come up with. Is anyone here offended by yoga pants? Just askin'.

I have a cheap hand steamer I bought at Walgreens to repair the headliner in my 740il.. I think it was under $40.
I started at the top of the car and worked in 14x14 sections, I kept the steamer about 7-10 inches from the body and let it generate enough steam to moisten the surface, I then used a damp cloth to remove the haze/dirt. I had a bucket of clean water to rinse the microfiber between panels.
When final drying the car I used a quick detailer to lubricate the drying towel.
Very pleased overall.
