Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Also cleaned the MAS with "circuit board cleaner spray" (gave it a good washing).

Suggestion
This will cause air leaks and rough idle.I would also think about cleaning the MAF.

Simce collecting my car from its 80000k service it was running roughly -- uneven idle -- big cloud of smoke on first startup after the drive home -- idle was about 1200 to 1300 rpm and sounded and felt rough.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Also -- one of the pins that holds the air boxe square was broken off and the rubber missing from the body -- so made up a replacement and fixed it in place and made a replacement rubber -- all fits neat and square -- kinda *issed off that the dealer tech did not mention it.

The oil filler cap was left off -- put it back on and all seems to be ok again -- why would that be?
Thanks for any explination.
Why was the oil filler cap off? Did the service guys forget to put it back on??
If the cap was off all along, that alone would explain why your engine was running rough.
Yes, the service guys left the cap off.
And this morning it is still running rough at idle.
Checked oil -- looks nice and clean.
Water looks clean also.
(and -- unrelated issue -- the engine lid shock/lifter has failed!)
They may have forgotten to tighten other clamps also like at the throttle body. This will cause air leaks and rough idle.I would also think about cleaning the MAF.
Was the smoke from a textron tretment?
Careless workmanship would make me seek another mechanic.
Much better now -- rang the dealer -- they were apolagetic and offered to see/fix the car whenever ok for me -- but I am 3 hours away and just cannot get there for at least 3-4 weeks.
So -- took the airfilter box off and found the clamp that is "at the front" up against the throttle body to be seized so that it felt tight but was not -- and I think -- cannot be certain -- that the rubber was not on all the way -- the bottom was perhaps not square and thet would have caused an air leak.

All back together and it idles like it did before.
Finally -- noticed a "wet" area next to the air con compressor -- a T shaped peice with a hose that runs away to the front -- will get the part description/No and will post -- looking for comments on that weeping/leak.
Sounds as though you are capable enough to troubleshoot and maintain your 996 without the dealer, who is 3 hrs away. Nice job on the rough idle repair.
Hello Barn,
It is hard to admit but I am starting to think I enjoy working on my car more than driving it -- weird I know -- but I am quite happy to plug along and do jobs and make bits and work out how things work -- takes me back over 30 years ago when I was a mechanic (Tech) in an Alfa/Fiat dealership -- those were the days -- simple life. Might just get a durometric tester so I can read the codes and then print out the workshop manuals and spend a bit more time "under the new girl" which is probably not much more difficult to work on than my 964 which although it never once broke down spent more time in the workshop being fixed than out on the road -- did I mention weird?
The rubber thing from the airbox falls off everytime I change my filter. It's on the floor of the bay where your mechanic worked on it.
I'd call them and have em mail it to you.
The throttle body clamp hose thing is tricky to get on correctly.
Can you take a picture of the leaky T piece? and post it that may help identify the thing
