Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
22 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

as a sidenote, my indy and I decided it best to remove my K&N and went back to stock and voila no more cel o2 sensor issues.
Hi all,
New member here! I recently purchased a '99 996 Carrera 6-speed (
this one
, actually ). Following a PPI that revealed that O2 codes were being thrown, I opted to replace the aftermarket K&N intake in favor of the stock airbox.
Fast forward to earlier today when I've finally gotten around to do the work, I noticed something funky. The MAF sensor plug when installed is oriented 180 degrees backwards, meaning the right angle is facing away from the passenger side of the car where the wire loom containing the MAF plug exits. Now, I'm very much aware that both the MAF sensor itself and the plug are directionally keyed such that you can't mess it up
, but I've been scratching my head because it appears my car has an inverted plug. Let me explain with pictures:
See how above the MAF plug exits towards the driver-side at a concerning level of tension. I've posted pics below of the plug and connector for you MAF experts out there - anyone have any ideas?? My guess is that the plug coming out of the loom was oriented incorrectly, because I'm nearly certain the MAF is correctly installed (per the key'ed direction) and the MAF is still functional.
Thoughts?David
It is really hard to goof this up. You are correct, the wiring loom should be pointed towards the passenger side, not the drivers side. Since both the MAF and the connector will only go together in the correct way, are you sure the MAF is installed the right way? Other than that, I have no idea. The heated wire part of the MAF should be pointing into the airstream.
I had the same issue when I took the K&N filter OUT of my car last year and put the stock airbox back in. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to get the darn thing plugged in correctly. I can't remember what I did, but I think it was easy. FYI, the only thing that K&N is going to do is to increase the temperature of the air going into your engine. I gave it to Porschetech and he verified this. Hope this picture helps.
Maybe I had to basically reverse the rubber boot on the wiring by pulling it down and rotating it 180 degrees.
Check if you can take apart the elbow part of the connector where the wire enters the connector. Looks like it was turned 180 degree. Compare with the pic below
Yes, you can only orient the MAF one way, but your connector that plugs into the MAF is turned around 180 degrees. See Ahsai's photo (yellow arrow). There's a marking on the lower middle part of the connector. Now look at your pic. There's no marking. I bet if you flip it 180 you'll see the marking.
Thanks all
@Ahsai
and
@Bash Hat
agreed the connector is 180 degrees flipped, but it is also directionally keyed. See in my plug/connector comparison pic - there is a square end and a rounded end on the plug that the MAF connector fits into. So simply flipping it around isn't possible.
Similarly, re: the boot orientation - it looks like from the pictures that the plastic tube that the MAF inserts into cannot be flipped - also the placement of the MAF makes sense compared to the pic @Ahsai uploaded.
I just took a look at mine. It has the markings on both sides. I could be wrong but it seems that the top oval piece unclips from the connector (there's a pin either side). Try to unclip the oval piece from the connector and flip it 180. Then your wires won't be stretched and the 5 pin connector will still be oriented the correct way.
Yep. Don't flip the actual connector that plugs into the MAF. Won't fit if you try. Just unhook and flip the piece that connects the the top of the 5 pin connector.
as a sidenote, my indy and I decided it best to remove my K&N and went back to stock and voila no more cel o2 sensor issues. Looked cool when I bought the car with it, but after reading many great posts here I saw no upside for K&N. Anyone want it?
I wouldn't mind a few bucks + whatever shipping is, but I am not going to let it sit in my storage forever. Offers? Otherwise it will become cool shop art mounted to wall
I have no idea what it's worth. Less than 1,000 miles from what I can tell when the PO installed it and then I bought it. PM is fine if you want it.
Thanks. Easy as you described. Not sure how it ended up this way in the first place.
Here's some pics in case it helps someone else.
