Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Monday I was at the track in the pouring rain, and I had an absolute blast. It just reinforces my love for the 996 and my understanding of just how spectacular they are. Of course everyone here knows that - I'm preaching to the choir. But I thought I'd start out the day by stating that. Oh, but on the downside, my car is ready for it's most expensive repairs in my 2 years of ownership. It's time for brakes - almost $600 for new rotors... and it needs new rear tires too. All in all, not too bad a price to pay for the fun!

Sounds like you had a blast and were using the car how it was meant to be used. Just have to start figuring in consumables when considering budget for track events. Otherwise they sneak up on you pretty quickly.

Just a thought - buy them from Sunset at cost and put them on yourself. Very easy DIY and you'll save yourself a bunch of money. Make sure you order caliper bolts with them.

POST 4Original post

yeah... sucks that you need rotors and tires at the same time. But, they are def cool fun!

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well that's what impresses me about this car so much. To give you a little background, I've been a track junkie for 13 years and I'm my region's chief instructor... So I know what to expect and I know the pitfalls. What I like about the 996 is how capable it is. As an advanced driver, I can drive my car (with the X74 and PS2s) right to the track, put on my helmet and go - and be rewarded by a very capable car. (It almost rivals the reward of driving a stock Exige... but not quite ) Certainly it's not quite like my race car - but that I have to load up onto the trailer a day before, pack lots of gear, a few sets of tires, etc. The 996 is kind of "arrive and drive"! I buy most of my parts from Suncoast in Florida - they're in my timezone so shipping is quite fast. I didn't know about the caliper bolts, I'll look into that.

POST 6Original post

You've done pretty well, from the sound of things. I've only had my 996 for a month and I've put four new tires on it, as well as a new RMS (neither of which were unexpected, BTW). On another note, I drove the C4S to the office for the first time today. I'm an early riser, so I generally end up parking up close. I wondered what kind of comments I might get today. So far - I have gotten quite a few, and they have all been positive. Everybody who has commented knows I am a car guy, and they have been genuinely happy for me. I have not yet heard one questionable comment. These really are awesome cars! I can't wait to get mine on the track. I will have it at my local PCA 2nd Saturday breakfast in a few days, and then on the spring tour in southern Indiana. It's all good!

POST 7Original post

I just had a brake fluid change, oil change and the pump for the wiper fluid replaced. That bill was $700. but hey, it's worth it to me to continue driving such a great dream.

POST 8Original post

Yeah, brake fluid, oil change, plugs, a bunch of coils, etc. etc. but I'm strangely okay with this...

Sounds like you had a good time at the DE. When I went to sign up (early March) it was already filled for my class. I would have loved to have learned how to drive my C4S in the rain!

POST 10Original post

I bought OEM front rotors, OEM front and rear pads, wear sensors and caliper bolts from sunset this month. Total with shipping was under $600.00.

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 6465072

Wow, that's a good price when you include rotors. I did pads and sensors only on all four wheels on the Cayenne last summer and they were close to that price without the rotors!

POST 12Original post

I love the mix of usability and performance the 996 offers. Just a few weeks ago, I drove my car to a wet autocross. Checked tire pressures, put on my helmet and off I went. It's amazing to me that a stock 10 year old 996 could compete with purpose built cars and hold it's own. So much so that I snagged FTD (in the wet). Especially for a car that's not supposed to be very good in this kind of slow speed venue. In the dry, the car is fairly competitive with other cars in my street tire group which is pretty surprising. A few years back, I would have been lugging R-comps, jack, impact and tools in my car. Now, I arrive, drive and smile at the fact I don't have to work nearly as hard for the same amount of smiles.
