Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So my 996 is in for an RMS replacement. They are also suggesting a clutch replacement at the same time. This I all understand. Here is the question. The clutch has about 45% of it's friction material on it but is very heavy and has a high uptake because, appearantly, the springs on the pressure plate are wearing out and require more force to release the clutch. Anyone heard of this? Is it odd for the mechanism to wear out before the friction material? The car for the most part is driven lightly (no clutch dumps, etc.) It is a 2002 C2 Coupe with 48K miles. Thanks! Andy

POST 2Original post

I'm not sure, but 48K on the original clutch isn't bad. Also - the clutch is going to be readily accessable while they do the RMS, so it makes sense to do it, IMHO.

POST 4Original post

What do they want to charge you? Should not be more than $600 - $700.

$85 labor (rest is covered by RMS replacement under warranty) and $450 for the clutch kit. The pricing is fair, i just think the clutch shouldn't need replacement before the friction surface wears out.

POST 6Original post

Do the clutch, particularly if you don't already need a flywheel. Often times by the time a clutch really shows its wear the flywheel has already been scratched/damaged and that is another $600+. With a new disc you should avoid that for much longer.

Good point, thanks
