Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Performed · outcome unconfirmed
He replaced the excessively worn items and installed new seals with new bolts.
Leading evidence: 'Install seals' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Install seals' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.

Suggestion
He went through all potential or common wear points and decided not to replace the things that he didn't need to and replaced the things that did.

Suggestion
It's a pedantic argument over the definition of "rebuild." If you think "Repair" is a more appropriate nomenclature, then let's call it that and move on.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey everyone,
Crossposting into this forum in the hopes I can get some more visibility. Need a replacement 6 speed after the current one developed some major binding. Any leads/help appreciated. thanks!
WTB 996 Transmission
Good call. Im sending my TT box to Stanley as soon as I get it out. Stanley(owner) was extremely helpful and gladly answered my questions. FYI, his team invented the 2nd gear pop out detente. 2 day turnaround. Who does that??
I third that opinion...I live about 15 minutes from GBox and Stanley is a great guy and does wonderful work. I was fortunate to be able to pop in and chat a few times in the past year. Just rebuilt my '99 6 speed that was giving the pinion bearing growl and it's probably better than new. Very quick turn time to boot.
Sorry for the delay in my reply...been knee deep in some other issues with my engine rebuild.
Stanley at GBox replaced the pinion bearing, 3rd gear syncro ring, 3rd cone ring, added the shift detent, 2x differential seals, main seal, drive shaft seal (C4), transmission mount and a bunch of small o-rings, seals and bushings and all new external fasteners. That, plus labor was around $3k.
You're welcome. I don't know at what point a repair becomes a rebuild. I had no observable issues other than the bearing noise, no shifting or leaking issues at all. He went through all potential or common wear points and decided not to replace the things that he didn't need to and replaced the things that did. That inspection and professional assessment constitutes work to me. Whatever you want to call it, I was pleased with the work. :-)
I didn't say it wasn't work or it wasn't of value but it was far from a rebuild. A rebuilt transmission should have all new bearings and synchros in the transmission and in the differential too. He replaced the excessively worn items and installed new seals with new bolts. Did you get an itemized list on the bill?
OK. When you rebuild an engine you don't always replace everything...crank, cams, etc may not get replaced if they don't show signs of out of tolerance wear. Wear items are replaced, if they need it. It's a pedantic argument over the definition of "rebuild." If you think "Repair" is a more appropriate nomenclature, then let's call it that and move on.
Yes I got an itemized bill. That is in summary what I shared.
My point is, GBox did good work and I recommend them. Just trying to help with some recent personal experience.
I didn't say replace everything. Replace the wear items like all the bearings. I didn't say they didn't do a good work either, I have no issue with that. Calling this a rebuild is not accurate at all and telling people that it was is just as wrong. If GBox told you this was a rebuild then that's just flat out wrong. Call another transmission shop and tell them what was done and see if they think it's a rebuild.
Geez.
Poor choice of words on my part. You win. Gbox didn't tell me it was a rebuild. They fixed my transmission quickly and effectively and I thought I would contribute that.
I don't see how it makes a difference to someone wanting to know about a place that does good work on Porsche transmissions...which I think was part of the OP's request and the nature of the thread. Every job will be different based on the needs identified.
Hope we can move on.
