When I replaced my axles I used a 3 jaw puller and use the nose to push it out while the three legs were on the hub.

Then again sometimes you have to ask yourself whether it's worth the hassle when you can just buy a new (or good used) half shaft for a fairly reasonable price...

The manual I am using says to press the shaft out of the housing after removing the retaining nut.

Suggestion
Before changing differential fluid when going around a turn and even mild engine power applied a growling sound with vibration would happen similar to when tires are going over rough asphalt.
Replace differential roller bearings or maybe the gears

Suggestion
Gonna call that fixed for now and in the future when dropping the engine will take a look at replacing differential roller bearings or maybe the gears which apparently were not getting sufficient lubrication from the old fluid.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am going to replace the half shaft on my Porsche. The manual I am using says to press the shaft out of the housing after removing the retaining nut. Where can I get one of these presses? It looks like a disk with holes in it to screw into the hub. Does anyone have any other method of removing the shaft, other than pressing it out. I have not removed the outer nut yet.
I didn't remove the rear ones, but I did my fronts (C4S). If I remember correctly after removing the nut I was able to slide it out after a few good hits with a rubber mallet.

"Replacing the half shaft" requires nothing more than a 8mm hex key or socket (assuming you've gotten the hub nut off). If you're talking about the CV joint(s) that's a different story. Common knowledge says the outer CV joints are not replaceable but I've read differing accounts/opinions. I would think that if you've got some experience and understand how CV joints work, they are probably replaceable (yes you'll need a press to remove it from the axle). Then again sometimes you have to ask yourself whether it's worth the hassle when you can just buy a new (or good used) half shaft for a fairly reasonable price... Good luck
I bought a used half shaft complete. I purchased a rebuild kit for the CV joint. I plan to have a shop rebuild the CV joint for me. Have heard that it would not be an easy thing to do.
Thanks for the info on replacing the shaft. There are several parts to remove before the shaft can be removed. I bought a ball joint removal kit . Anyway, I will give it a try. I appreciate any help I get from the Rennlist.
Our 996 about a year ago started making a noise and vibration from the rear of car when going around a turn with power applied. Let off the gas while in a turn and the growling sound stops. Does it left or right turn.
This weekend changed differential fluid and next time driving to work will see what effect if any. If no help I suppose could be a strut (both are leaking), a CV joint, bearing inside the differential, or wheel bearing? I've yet to read someone mention the symptoms of a bad CV joint.
What are the symptoms you are tearing apart your rear suspension to fix?
On ours making noise and vibration when going around turn with power applied seemed much better when driving to work this morning. Will have a better data on drive home because there are some long sweeping curves.
When I replaced my axles I used a 3 jaw puller and use the nose to push it out while the three legs were on the hub. I got it from the loaner tools at o'reilly auto parts.
Motul 300. There is a thread from a few months ago. A bunch of us used it this winter.
Zbomb may even have the 3 extra quarts from when he installed a ls and couldnt use it. He was gonna give it away for the cost of shipping. U may want to see if its available?
75W-90, available at every auto parts store. Nothing special needed unless you have the rare limited slip differential. If you don't have drain port just use small hand pump to drain then refill. On the "What did you do to your 996 today" thread we have pictures of our '02 Tiptronic differential change.
You still didn't list symptoms why you tearing car apart.
As to why I think it is a CV joint . I turned the car in a tight circle and heard a clacking sound coming from the right rear.
How do you know if your Porsche has a limited slip diff.? would it be indicated in the VIN?
Not in the VIN, a sticker on the bottom side of the frunk lid shows options. I don't know code for limited slip but understand it is rare option. There are websites that have VIN decoders and that might also show options.
Before changing differential fluid when going around a turn and even mild engine power applied a growling sound with vibration would happen similar to when tires are going over rough asphalt. Now diving into a turn sharper than normal and punching the gas can barely induce that sound and vibration. Gonna call that fixed for now and in the future when dropping the engine will take a look at replacing differential roller bearings or maybe the gears which apparently were not getting sufficient lubrication from the old fluid.
