Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

14 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Transaxle is ready to be dropped on my 996. But, Im having trouble with the 12 oclock bell housing bolt. Ive lowered the motor and tranny about an inch. I thought a 3ft extension would fit over the top but no luck. Has anyone had success removing from the driver or passenger side? Its easier to get a socket on the bolt from the passenger side it seems. Its really not a bad job except for that one damn bolt! Thanks for your wisdom!

POST 2Original post

Passenger side and a flex heat ratchet for me. Get the socket on and then connect ratchet.

Thanks man. Back at it tomorrow AM.

POST 4Original post

Always loosen the toughest bolt first. With all the others loose, you now have more pressure on that top bolt and no room for leverage.

POST 5Original post

I used a 30" (or so) extension with a wobble adapter then the socket. I hate the floppy swivel/universal joint adapters. If you only have the universal joint style, wrap it fairly tight with electrical tape to stiffen it.

POST 6Original post

Every U-Joint I have is duct taped... Good tip tommelton Thats said, I do use them fairly frequently and when its the tool you need, its the tool you need - especially cause its pretty far down on the list of preferred methods I try first.

Nice ! Good luck - take it slow. Trans super heavy. Make sure you're happy with height of the car off the ground - needs to be up there to be high enough to clear trans if you're fully removing.

confident shes high enough with the quick jacks and extensions. Tranny is separated about 3/4 and having difficulty with full separation. I know the height of both tranny and engine need to be same to slide off input shaft. How much force needed to separate?

POST 11Original post

I was doing it own my back - I laid down, feet on car, hands at back of trans and pulled and wiggled... That looks plenty high...quick jacks pretty cool.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

And shes out. I made this way more complicated than it needed to be. But learned a lot in the process.

POST 13Original post

Did you special order those "post blocks" between the jack and the jack points on the car? My quick jacks only came with different size rubber blocks. Nice set up. Good luck.

those blocks are the SUV adapters. Ordered separately.
