Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

It took some creative use of wood blocks and shims to get it seat to the nut and snapped the bolt but that happened on the other side as well.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

2 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My 2004 C4S was throwing a bad cat converter code. I bought some hi flow sport cats and need to do plugs and coil packs as well. Also my mufflers are rusting and I'm sourcing some good used units. I got the right side muffler off today. Thankfully the cat hardware and other fasteners have come loose with lots of penetrant and heat. However, the lower of the 3 13mm nuts on the muffler support are a bugger. The right side one snapped the bolt. The left side is now rounded off and I can't get my socket to bite on the nut. Next steps? I can't get a dremel or other tool in there to grind it off from the inside. Do I need to do some major surgery and can the supports be used again with some press in bolts or other solution?

POST 2Original post

I used this tool with great success on a rounded nut in that exact spot: https://www.harborfreight.com/38-in-...-pc-67894.html

POST 3Original post

Just grind the old bolts out and weld new ones in. A decent muffler or machine shop should have a stainless steel welding rig if u dont.

Thanks for the suggestion. That worked. It took some creative use of wood blocks and shims to get it seat to the nut and snapped the bolt but that happened on the other side as well. Both mufflers are off. Now to figure out how to reuse these hanger support pieces by either having someone weld in new or source some press fit studs.

POST 5Original post

Glad to know that worked for you! Two more tips on this job: 1 - A ratchet with a flex head makes those three nuts MUCH more accessible. 2 - When reinstalling the mufflers, put the long bolts on with the nut up and the bolt head down so it will be an easier job next time. You can leave the three nut bracket in place that way.

POST 6Original post

I have a set of the muffler bracket if you are interested.
