This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

With respect to the navigation system's compatibility with the iPhone 6, I'd guess not as the 996s run ended well before smart phones took over our lives, but I'm sure others here can speak more directly to that.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Its been a while since I have owned a air cooled car and once I drove a 911, I was hooked. Seems the 996.2 is great model to get into the water cooled versions. Budget has me looking at the 996.2 vs a 997. I am currently looking for a very specific color combo of Silver/Red. I have found a cab on the east coast that's seems to have been dealer serviced for most of its life. Has the Navi and seems fully loaded. I know about the IMS issues and how it has crippled these cars if not taken care of. Is there anything I should be asking for before I do a PPI? Also wondering if the stock Navi system would work with an IPhone 6 or would a upgrader into a aftermarket stereo be the route to go?

POST 2Original post

I'd ask to see the service records for the car and then go through them. Hopefully the PPI will done by a competent Porsche mechanic and will yield evidence of IMS/RMS maintenance. With respect to the navigation system's compatibility with the iPhone 6, I'd guess not as the 996s run ended well before smart phones took over our lives, but I'm sure others here can speak more directly to that. Maybe there is an auxiliary jack in the back of the head unit that you can tap into.

POST 3Original post

Looking for one with a factory nav makes little sense to me as technology has greatly evolved since 10+ years ago. A sales guy tried to emphasize that the advance package was a $4k option when we tried to buy an MDX and negotiate a price. I asked him if he would still pay $2k for a rear projection DLP tv these days. Enough said...

POST 5Original post

I can't speak to the quality of the factory nav as my 996.2 didn't come with it, but I can recommend going the double-din route and getting something like the Alpine or Pioneer CarPlay-capable head units if you're interested in iPhone integration. I have the Pioneer AppRadio4 that I installed myself, and it integrates pretty well with my iPhone 6. Some combinations of apps (Spotify, I'm looking at you) aren't ready for prime-time (ie. SUCK), but iTunes, Maps, Podcasts, Siri all work pretty well. If you already have factory nav in the car, easy enough to pull out and put a double-din unit like the ones from the manufacturers mentioned above. You won't have to go through relocating the AC/Heater controls and modifying the horseshoe, so even easier.

POST 6Original post

Clip your phone to your dash. Problem solved. Good luck with your hunt.

POST 7Original post

The 996 is a car you don't mind getting lost in. Nav not needed.

POST 8Original post

I love my car but would pay the extra $10k-15k for the earlier 997. Interesting comments on NAV units. I have one in my Yuke and I bet I haven't used it in six or eight years.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the comments guys Well the color combo I want Silver/Red 911 cab has the Navi, so I am not looking for one with the Navi itself, as I have read how bad it is. Seems a lot has happened since it was introduced and aftermarket has taken over

POST 10Original post

That's a great color combination, and I see why you want it. However, color would almost be the last thing on my list. Gettting the right car is more important than what color it is, IMO. I looked for 6 months to find the right car, and black was one of my least favorite colors (looks great clean, but keeping it that way is work!). However, the right car came along and you guessed it, black. I didn't think twice about buying it, and now 2 years down the road I can't imagine it being anything else.

I have to disagree with the 996.2 I think there was enough made that I can find the color combo I want without having to get a color I am not looking for. The one I am looking has spent most of its life at the Dealership getting serviced, that's a good sign. But as we know with Porsche there are some issues, nothing is perfect.

POST 12Original post

Mine is a 2000, doesn't have any nav. I like it that way.
