Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I recently replaced the top on my car, actually went a lot easier than I thought. I was hoping that I would see some way of adjusting the top while i had the cover off but never seen anything. If anyone has seen and or fixed this please let me know, it seals ok but it drives me crazy knowing it isnt right. To me it looks as though the top isnt being allowed to fully extend?

POST 2Original post

Not many on Rennlist that are brave enough to put on their own top, congrats on that. My understanding is that the Hook at the front of the top pulls it to the windshield. I dont remember if the receiver for the Hook is adjustable or not. I know that the receivers for the Tabs on the front/sides of the top can be adjusted. It could be that the Tab receivers can be moved a bit farther forward. I have spend a LOT of time getting my '99 cabs' top working well. It had been replaced by a previous owner but i had to replace the Hook mechanism etc. If you do adjust the receivers on the top of the windshield, be careful when you tighten the bolts back down. The nut within the windshield frame can easily shatter if tightened too much - then you end up getting into the world of nutserts.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The top really was pretty easy, i bought one on eBay with the glass rear window. I removed the old top carefully, as though I was going to re-install it. The new one went on fairly quickly and easy. The biggest thing is getting the seams lined up. I tried to move or adjust the front mounts but haven't seen any significant improvement .

POST 4Original post

It seems like the cloth above the drivers side front window is not seated all the way into the trim (the slight bulging). Somewhere I think I read that the the top should be put on in the sun so that it gets hot and stretches well when you put it on. I think then when it cools down it is tighter. Can you tell if it is the front trim that is too high or if it is the back trim that is too low? Here are a couple of pics I happen to have... None with it completely closed.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It is a bit loose at the front drivers corner, first time installing a top, I loosened up everything tonight with no luck. The same problem was there with the original top I had hoped that with the new install I would see adjustment points. I checked the trim but there isnt enough movement to get the lines to match

POST 6Original post

Are your tension wires with the snap bobbles on them both connected at the back of the top? You can see them or feel for them when the top is stopped in the 'service mode' position.

POST 7Original post

Hurdi may be onto something here. Even if the tension snap bobbles are attached, I believe their mounts are adjustable - maybe you can increase the tension. This is a picture of the bobble on the rear main tension frame (I don't have a pic of the other corresponding, adjustable bobble on the car).

POST 8Original post

Yes on the sun. I bought the cheap eBay top and it made a loud pop when I first closed it indicating the hook had to really snap it into place. I called the top company and said that was typical. Leave it in the sun AND wet it. I pretty much did this whenever I was going to be parked in the driveway for a few hours. In a few weeks it was great and almost two years later is still awesome. You may likely have another problem but try the water and sun.

Nice work on the DIY top installation. (despite the issues you are having.) I'd love to see a write-up of what you learned during the installation! Thanks for sharing.

POST 10Original post

Look at some of the tech articles here under body to see if one of them might better assist you with making it line up properly. Good job on the fix BTW! -Luccia

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Everyone kept telling me it was going to be a real PITA, but I took my time and didnt try to complete it in an afternoon and it went fairly easy. I am fortunate to have a hard top I used in between work sessions, the car did remain a daily driver during the install making it a little more difficult and time consuming. What I did learn is, take special care anywhere you have to remove fasteners from aluminum, the aluminum is about as hard as clay and you can strip the screws really, really easily. Find a 2 sided high tack mylar tape or something similar before beginning its worth its weight in gold. About middle of the top there are about 6 to 8 plastic retainers with a plastic Philips head "screw" in it, The head strips REALLY easy making it a pain to get out. The end result was very gratifying, it definitely looks a lot sharper.
