Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Aside from the exhaust, the main issue is the transmission.
Leading evidence: 'transmission' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'transmission' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace 6 speed transaxle (anyone have a lead' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

- Replace the brake pads (has to be an award for the most % of the old pad used)

- Replace the 6 speed transaxle (anyone have a lead on one near Charlotte, NC, or have a recommendation on a place to look?)

- Replace exhaust (have a spare set of mufflers, but need the brackets that attach to the mufflers and muffler tips, Lucky might donate these too).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

996 project number two has managed to follow me home, so to go along with
Project Lucky
my 2001 996 C2 coupe, I now have a 2001 996 C2 cabriolet that I am going to attempt to save. So I am calling this one project Janus because of the split personality of the car as it sits today. One one side we have a stock 996 cab, soft and comfortable (as it should be IMHO), and then on the other side we have what is essentially an open exhaust. There is cat-less x-pipe and then muffler delete tips, but nothing to reduce the sound.
So what is wrong with it? Aside from the exhaust, the main issue is the transmission. 2nd gear cannot be engaged, it isn't the syncro, but rather it grinds and pops if you attempt to slot it in. Aside from that it is a strong runner that needs a bit of spit and polish.
Current project list-
- Replace transmission (might borrow Lucky's for a bit)
- Replace exhaust (have a spare set of mufflers, but need the brackets that attach to the mufflers and muffler tips, Lucky might donate these too).
- Brakes / Tires (both are beyond shot)
- Dr. Colorchip the rock chips / full polish
- Fix passenger side rear window, regulator seems to be broken
- Flush the coolant, previous owner did the water pump but he didn't flush the coolant
Up in the air for a couple of the easy repairs:
- Replace the brake pads (has to be an award for the most % of the old pad used)
- Flush the fluid (it was a bit dirty)
- Next up, install mufflers and swap the x-pipe to the coupe.
I prefer my Guinness on draft, not coming out of the calipers. Thankfully it now looks more like a Labatt after flushing the system fully.
So the previous owner was a bit clueless, the tires and brakes were both well beyond their usefulness. He said a buyer was coming down from VA to potentially buy it and drive it home, I'm glad that didn't happen because that would have been metal on metal after a few more stops.
From a cat delete x-pipe and no mufflers, to a full factory setup.
Next items to tackled:
- Rear passenger window regulator
- Replace the 6 speed transaxle (anyone have a lead on one near Charlotte, NC, or have a recommendation on a place to look?)
- PDR
- Paint the front bumper / hood (this is a maybe)
- Tires
