Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Used ones seems fairly available online but I am not massively keen on used parts in general.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Out of the blue I have a couple of warning lights on. PSM and ABS coming on together.
I have scanned for codes and it gives a steering angle sensor fault.
I have re-calibrated to no effect.
4 wheel alignment also no cure.
I have priced the sensor and it is a whopping 700 and change
Used ones seems fairly available online but I am not massively keen on used parts in general.
Am I being too fussy here? And does anyone have any thoughts on what other than the sensor might be the issue.
Finally, is there a cheaper new sensor option out there?
Thanks, as ever, for all responses
Thanks for the reply, the lights come back on in 2 or 3 miles of driving. Does not seem to be influenced by speed, road surface quality or enthusiasm of driving style. But they do re-set after each re-start.
You guys need to find someone with a PIWIS to read the steering angle sensor and see if it's working properly, and re-zero it if needed. Durametric claims to do this - but it does not actually work.
Some independent mechanics have PIWIS systems so it does not have to be the dealer. Where I live there are two independent shops within 15 miles that have PIWIS systems.
Or if you're the adventurous type you can buy a clone and have your own:

I actually bought a used one, but havent installed it yet. There are a couple reasons for this.
# 1 - It looks like a major pain of a job
# 2 - While the lights are certainly annoying, they dont seem to have any real effect on driving - the brakes work fine - not sure about the psm but it doesnt do anything funky like slowing individual wheels etc. - bottom line is I can still drive the car as is so Im not in any rush to start tearing the steering column apart.

Another option which i have not explored but may work is their motorsport version which is about $155-250 retail

I haven't replaced one on a 996, but have done multiple ones on Audi's which are very similar. Calibrating them is usually the hardest part. I don't know if the Durametric will do that or not.
