Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Test leaks' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check tires often too' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
I can short cut some of my inspections by checking torque seal to make certain suspension and caliper bolts have not moved.

Suggestion
If you owned a tire shop, would you risk your liability on a questionable repair, especially on a vehicle without TPMS?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Found this the other day. Goes to show that if we arent actively inspecting our vehicles and doing routine basic checks (things they put in the owners manual that seem basic, mundane, and over the top), then we dont really know the condition and safety of our cars.
Anyway, I plan to drop off the wheel at a tire shop.
Edit on 7-6: I dropped off the tire, and the shop said immediately it was repairable, but then asked are you sure its leaking? It wasnt, but I wasnt sure. They removed the 1/2 screw and tested for leaks. No leaks, no repair needed. I asked if it made sense to patch anyway and they said it didnt.
Passenger side rear tire, 99 cab manual
I have done it plugged and patched same spot and track and no issues back in the days but not today. If street I wouldn’t hesitate and have it repaired and patched only not plugged. If cash no biggie then replaced. Since damage is near edge I would go ahead and replaced both tires
Correct, that's why if you're going to track your car, or drive it like you're on a track (triple digits) you need to step up the maintenance/inspections.
I'd hate for that to come out or cause a blowout at high speeds, or just entering a fast corner.
I can short cut some of my inspections by checking torque seal to make certain suspension and caliper bolts have not moved.
I also use safety wire for certain bolts.
I check my tires often too.
I'm glad you're on your toes.
Definitely repairable.
Yeah, that outer edge wear happened right after a track event on these new tires (back then). Plus, my alignment settings maximize tire life, so I suspect that makes it a little more pronounced.
Tires are roughly 5 years old. If I track the car again, I might just replace all 4. Ive gotten over 20,000 miles from these tires so far, including 3 track days. Goes to show that alignment matters a lot for tread wear vs. performance.
I actually meant inside the tread groove near the wall of the groove, looks like a long crack on each tread groove., Just wondering.
5 years old, I would probably keep running them. Yeah tread seems to have lasted a while.
PCA DE Safety chair here (for Riesentoter). Please do not run a patched or plugged tire on the track. I know you are leaning towards not running it on the track, but zero good can come from it, and us safety guys hate doing paperwork.
Appreciate the note. I was more thinking of replacing all four than replace the one or two only. And also, going to a better summer-only tire than the all-seasons I have currently.
Very close to side wall inner fillet. You won't know until you remove the tire from the rim and have someone knowledgeable inspect it.
Tires being 5 years of age I would put new rubber on and be done with it.
The question you are asking is; is it worth the risk?
Well, I removed the spare in my car 4 years ago, somaybe. If I replace that tire, I feel like that a sloppy slope. I think I should replace both rear tires. And then why do just 2 tires and then do 2 more in 2 years, why not do all 4.
Could you plug the tire yourself, sure. Will a REPUTABLE commercial shop do patch repair, Nope.
The puncture is in the shoulder area of the tire, industry standards say thats non-repairable
Mike, sorry to see what happened. FWIW, just got an email today from the PCA Chicago region saying there is a 10% discount for pca members on tires at Discount Tires. Always good to save a couple bucks. Bridgestone and Michelin were also running deals as well. You probably already seen them.
Discount Tire is reputable, and at a corporate level, risk-averse. To my eye, this puncture is in their red zone.
